General note
1.) if you run the remote profiler, the filter settings in the eclipse environment are not taken into account. Instead you must provide the filter settings in the start command of your application server. You do this by adding an environment variable PROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER to the startup command of your aplication, see below. 2.) Setting up the profiler package filters (in general) You must define the environment variable PROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER as shown below in the examples for tomcat, jboss, weblogic and resin. General important Note: The environment variable contains following parts: the application starting class (A ) inclusion filters (P ) exclusion filters (M ) You must provide exactly one starting class, but you can have multiple inclusion and exclusion filters. The parts MUST be separated by the OS specific path.separator, i.e. ":" for unix or ";" for WINDOWS platforms) example package filter setting for WINDOWS: -DPROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER=Aorg.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap;Msun.;Pmy.company.classes. example package filter setting for UNIX/LINUX: -DPROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER=Aorg.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap:Msun.:Pmy.company.classes. In the examples below we provide the WINDOWS style. Please take care to use the LINUX/UNIX style if that aplies to you.

Racial Profiling
The ACLU's Campaign Against Racial Profiling fights law enforcement and private security practices that disproportionately target people of color for investigation and enforcement. We represent individuals who have been victims of racial profiling by airlines, police, and government agencies. Our work also encompasses major initiatives in public education and advocacy, including the creation of essential resources, lobbying for the passage of data collection and anti-profiling legislation, and litigation of airline and highway profiling cases.

    Racial Profiling: Definition
November 23, 2005 Racial Profiling: Definition "Racial Profiling" refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Criminal profiling, generally, as practiced by police, is the reliance on a group of characteristics they believe to be associated with crime. Examples of racial profiling are the use of race to determine which drivers to stop for minor traffic violations (commonly referred to as "driving while black or brown"), or the use of race to determine which pedestrians to search for illegal contraband. Another example of racial profiling is the targeting, ongoing since the September 11th attacks, of Arabs, Muslims and South Asians for detention on minor immigrant violations in the absence of any connection to the attacks on the World Trade Center or the Pentagon. Law enforcement agent includes a person acting in a policing capacity for public or private purposes. This includes security guards at department stores, airport security agents, police officers, or, more recently, airline pilots who have ordered passengers to disembark from flights, because the passengers' ethnicity aroused the pilots' suspicions. Members of each of these occupations have been accused of racial profiling.

Profiling:
A Hidden Challenge
to the Regulation of Data Surveillance
Roger Clarke Principal, Xamax Consultancy Pty Ltd , Canberra Visiting Fellow, Department of Computer Science Australian National University Version of 28 November 1993 Published in the Journal of Law and Information Science 4,2 (December 1993) This document is at http://www.rogerclarke.com/DV/PaperProfiling.html
Abstract
Profiling is a data surveillance technique which is little-understood and ill-documented, but increasingly used. It is a means of generating suspects or prospects from within a large population, and involves inferring a set of characteristics of a particular class of person from past experience, then searching data-holdings for individuals with a close fit to that set of characteristics. It is rather different from better-known data surveillance techniques such as front-end verification and data matching. It raises rather different issues, and requires rather different regulatory measures. This paper surveys the limited information available, defines and describes the technique and its social implication, and argues the case for action by regulators.

Using the role attribute for profiling Profiling is the term used in DocBook to describe conditional text. Conditional text means you can create a single XML document with some elements marked as conditional. When you process such a document, you can specify which conditions apply for that version of output, and the stylesheet will include or exclude the marked text to satisfy the conditions. This feature is useful when you need to produce more than one version of a document, and the versions differ in minor ways. Then you do not have to maintain separate documents that are nearly but not quite the same, and thereby run the risk of the separate documents getting out of synchronization as you make changes. With conditional text, you keep all the variations in the same document and select the ones you want at production time. This feature is typically used to create different versions of a document for different audiences. That's where the term profiling comes in. You can create a document profiled for a particular audience. For example, software that runs on different platforms might need different installation instructions for each platform, but might otherwise be the same. You can create one version profiled for Linux customers and another profiled for Windows customers.

Profiling Your Applications with Eclipse Callisto
by John Ferguson Smart
The latest release of Eclipse (Eclipse 3.2) comes with Callisto , a rich set of optional plugins for Eclipse 3.2. Callisto includes a powerful profiling tool called the Eclipse , or TPTP. TPTP provides a comprehensive suite of open source performance-testing and profiling tools, including integrated application monitoring, testing, tracing and profiling functionalities, and static-code analysis tools. Profiling tools are invaluable aids for localizing and identifying performance issues in all sorts of Java applications. In this article, we will look at how you can use TPTP to guarantee high-quality and high-performance code, even during unit and integration testing.
Installing TPTP
Figure 1. Installing TPTP from the remote site
Profiling a Java Application
TPTP is well suited to this type of task. A typical use case is to run load tests using a tool such as JMeter, and record and analyze the performance statistics using the TPTP tools. However, this is not the only way you can profile an application with TPTP. As a rule, the earlier you test, the fewer problems you have later. With TPTP, you can profile your code in a wide range of contexts, including JUnit test cases, Java applications, and web applications. And it is well integrated into the Eclipse IDE. So, there is no reason not to start preliminary performance tests and profiling early on.
