ON-LINE GUIDE TO
Second Edition, 1998 This is a second edition of former Interactive Prolog Guide that brings new design and better organization of chapters. It is also more "interactive" as I include Test Zone where you can try and test your Prolog programs interactively within your Java-capable web browser. Finally, I expect to add some chapters on advanced topics you asked me for. I still investigate the possibility to provide the Guide as a file to download but I have not decided yet. If you want to know more about the author of the site, you are welcomed to my Home Page . Also, your comments, suggestions and corrections are highly appreciated.

So, where should you go from there?

Prolog at Wikibooks Prolog is a general purpose logic programming language associated with artificial intelligence and computational linguistics Prolog has its roots in formal logic , and unlike many other programming languages , Prolog is declarative : The program logic is expressed in terms of relations, represented as facts and rules. A computation is initiated by running a query over these relations. The language was first conceived by a group around Alain Colmerauer in Marseille France , in the early 1970s and the first Prolog system was developed in 1972 by Colmerauer with Philippe Roussel. Prolog was one of the first logic programming languages, and remains among the most popular such languages today, with many free and commercial implementations available. While initially aimed at

Prolog Programming
You are the 3621st visitor to this page since March 20, 2001. Here are some issues involving Prolog programming, from simple examples to advanced applications. Since this (as every other of the pages) are work in progress, comments are always welcome. I am grown up with SICStus Prolog, but for this document I will use SWI-Prolog, since that is free and I have it installed on a machine here. Programming Prolog is not always easy: you have to get your head into a declarative way of thinking, and when you belive that you've finally grasped it, you have to start thinking about such non-intuitive things as unification order and programming with incomplete data structures. Do not give up: once you've learned it, you will discover a simple and yet beautiful programming language.

Prolog Programming: A First Course Posted: Tue Oct 26, 2004 5:13 am by ndaru Prolog Programming: A First Course
Author(s) : Paul Brna
Publication date : May 1999
Book Summary:
The course for which these notes are designed is intended for undergraduate students who have some programming experience and may even have written a few programs in Prolog. They are not assumed to have had any formal course in either propositional or predicate logic.
The original function was to provide students studying Artificial Intelligence (AI) with an intensive introduction to Prolog so, inevitably, there is a slight bias towards AI.
At the end of the course the students should be:
- familiar with the basic syntax of the language
- able to give a declarative reading for many Prolog programs - able to give a corresponding procedural reading - able to apply the fundamental programming techniques - familiar with the idea of program as data - able to use the facilities provided by a standard trace package to debug programs - familiar with the fundamental ideas of the predicate calculus - familiar with the fundamental ideas specific to how Prolog works This is a rather ambitious undertaking for a course of only twelve lectures so the lectures are supplemented with exercises and small practical projects wherever possible.
