History
Prolog (PROgramming LOGic) rose within the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It originally became popular with AI researchers, who know more about "what" and "how" intelligent behaviour is achieved. The philosopy behind it deals with the logical and declarative aspects. Prolog represents a fundamentally new approach to computing and became a serious competitor to LISP.
Significant Language Features
Prolog is a rich collection of data structures in the language and human reasoning, and a powerful notation for encoding end-user applications. It has its logical and declarative aspects, interpretive natur, compactness, and inherent modularity.
  • Intelligent Systems - programs which perform useful tasks by utilizing artificaial intelligence techniques. Expert Systems - intelligent systems which reproduce decision-making at the level of a human expert. Natural Language Systems - which can analys and respond to statements made in ordinary language as opposed to approved keywords or menu selections.

Great book for learning AI with Prolog, but....
... a horrible Prolog tutorial. This is not a good first book on Prolog. If you are new to Prolog and Logic Programming, you should read 'Art of Prolog' first. Prolog is quite different from other languages, and you'll need some time to get it. This book doesn't give you that time: after briefly introducing the basic concepts, Bratko dives at breakneck speed into recursion and list processing. Don't get me wrong, this is a magnificent book on how to do AI with Prolog, but it shouldn't be your first Prolog book. It's an excellent second book.

Excerpts from the Preface:
Prolog is an excellent programming contest language: Prolog is close enough to the ultimate specification language (logic), so that the distance between problem and solution is not too big. This means that, even if you don't have a clue about a good algorithm, you might still end up with a nice program that computes a useful result (at least for small problem sizes). Prolog is also a real programming language, which means you can express your favorite nifty optimal solution strategy in it. This book shows solutions to problems that were in the first 10 Prolog Programming Contests. The solutions in this book were not constructed by participants during the contest, since the contest rules always prevented that. However, many of our solutions could have been constructed during the contest under extreme time pressure, and so you will find many solutions using the generate and test strategy, together with a higher than usual deployment of

What Are the Different Types of Prolog Programming?
By JoanneP eHow Contributor updated: September 3, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • Prolog is a unique programming language. Prolog (Programming in Logic) is a programming language that was invented in France in the late 1960s and refined at the University of Edinburgh in the early 1970s. Although it was originally designed as a tool for working with natural languages like French and English, it has since become one of the premier artificial intelligence (AI) languages.
  • Prolog Programming
  • A Prolog program is basically a set of rules for answering questions. Once you write these rules-which is the hardest part of the process-you can submit a statement to the system, and it will use your rules to pronounce the statement true, false or undecidable.
When you submit a statement, Prolog looks for a rule whose conclusion is that statement. If it doesn't find one, the system can neither prove nor disprove the statement. If it does find a rule whose conclusion is the statement, it then looks at every condition of the rule and tries to prove each of them. Eventually, the system either proves everything it needs to prove, or fails. At the end of this process, Prolog makes a pronouncement about the truth of the statement.

    Prolog Programming
Prolog is a language based upon programming in logic. It is possible because Alan Robinson's resolution theorem prover can be implemented efficiently. Prolog does not have a notion of a program as such. There is a database of facts and rules. Rules are Horn clauses with a head consisting of a single functor and a body which can be a disjunction of terms. A fact is a rule whose body is empty (or more properly the single term true
    Goals and Goal Satisfaction
A goal is a conjunction a1,a2, ..., an of terms. To satisfy a goal the prolog inference engine chooses the leftmost term in the goal (a1 in this case) and tries to match it with a clause in the database. If such a clause (eg). is found then a1 in the goal is replaced by the body of the clause so that the goal becomes. b1,b2,b3,a2, ..., an Note that if the clause is a fact then the matched head is discarded. The goal is satisfiable if this process continues until the goal is empty. If a particular choice of matching clause fails the system backtracks and uses the next clause in the database that matches. Various techniques of prolog programming are described in this collection. Amongst these are Jonathan Hodgson
