Prostate Cancer Symptoms
Most men with prostate cancer have no symptoms . This is particularly true of early prostate cancer.
  • Currently, most prostate cancers are discovered when a prostate biopsy is performed after a raised serum prostate specific antigen (S. PSA) blood test is noted. This test is frequently performed as a part of a health screening program.

MeSH Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate , a gland in the male reproductive system . Most prostate cancers are slow growing; however, there are cases of aggressive prostate cancers. The cancer cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes . Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating , problems during sexual intercourse, or erectile dysfunction . Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease. Rates of detection of prostate cancers vary widely across the world, with South and East Asia detecting less frequently than in Europe, and especially the United States. Prostate cancer tends to develop in men over the age of fifty and although it is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in men, many never have symptoms, undergo no therapy, and eventually die of other causes. This is because cancer of the prostate is, in most cases, slow-growing, symptom-free, and since men with the condition are older they often die of causes unrelated to the prostate cancer, such as heart/circulatory disease, pneumonia, other unconnected cancers, or old age. About 2/3 of cases are slow growing, the other third more aggressive and fast developing.

FINASTERIDE (PROSCAR) AND PREVENTION OF PROSTATE CANCER

While obtaining a 25% risk reduction seems very appealing merely by popping a pill daily, individuals who would otherwise not take 5-ARIs need to seriously consider the very high number needed to treat to prevent one cancer. It is not hard to find physicians who regard 71 as too high to justify an intervention that is not totally risk free. There is also cost to consider. Finasteride can cost up to $60 U.S. per month.

Gamma-tocopherol is also available in supplements, generally as mixed tocopherols. Careful label reading is required since IU may be quoted (conversion 0.15 IU per mg) but it is common for only a total in IUs or milligrams for the beta, gamma and delta combined to be displayed. Products are available that contain 200 or more mg per capsule of the gamma form. Given that many individuals do not eat foods rich in the gamma form of vitamin E, supplements containing this form appear to be of interest.

Prostate cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in a man's prostate gland. The prostate gland is part of the reproductive system of men. It is a doughnut-shaped gland located between the base of the penis and the bladder. It surrounds the urethra, which is the tube through which urine and semen pass. The prostate makes the fluid that nourishes and carries sperm. Prostate cancer has become the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the US. It usually grows slowly. Men who have it often die from other causes before the cancer kills them. Still, prostate cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death in American men. The prostate cancer death rate is especially high among African American men. To learn more, please visit the U-M Health System's

Orchiectomy for the Treatment of Advanced Prostate Cancer
Last Revised November 25, 1995
Introduction What are the advantages of orchiectomy? What are the disadvantages of orchiectomy? ... Some things to think about
Introduction
Certainly until the late 1980s or even the early 1990s there was no doubt whatsoever that orchiectomy was the gold standard for the hormonal treatment of advanced prostate cancer. By carrying out the surgical removal of a man's testes, the physician was able to completely shut down the synthesis of testosterone, thus removing testosterone stimulation of the prostate cancer growth and progression of the disease. Even today the medical community still considers the development of every new form of treatment for advanced prostate cancer in terms of its effectiveness and safety compared to orchiectomy.

Prostate cancer is a disease which only affects men. Cancer begins to grow in the prostate - a gland in the male reproductive system. The word "prostate" comes from Medieval Latin prostate and Medieval French prostate . The ancient Greek word prostates means "one standing in front", from proistanai meaning "set before". The prostate is so called because of its position - it is at the base of the bladder.
