Prostate Cancer Overview
Adenocarcinoma of the prostate is the clinical term for a cancerous tumor on the prostate gland. As prostate cancer grows, it may spread to the interior of the gland, to tissues near the prostate, to sac-like structures attached to the prostate (seminal vesicles), and to distant parts of the body (e.g., bones, liver, lungs). Prostate cancer confined to the gland often is treated successfully. Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Prostate Cancer

Prostate Anatomy
The prostate gland is located in the pelvis, below the bladder, above the urethral sphincter and the penis, and in front of the rectum in men. It is made up of glandular tissue and muscle fibers that surround a portion of the urethra. The gland is covered by a membrane (called the prostate capsule) that produces prostate-specific antigen.
Incidence and Prevalence of Prostate Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in the United States, other than skin cancer. The ACS estimates that about 218,890 new cases will be diagnosed in 2007 and about 27,050 men will die of the disease. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, exceeded only by lung cancer.

    Abstract
RNASEL gene, unlike results previously reported. This finding increases the population at risk for XMRV infection from only those homozygous for the RNASEL variant to all individuals. Our observations provide evidence for an association of XMRV with malignant cells and with more aggressive tumors.

    MEAT
    The Recipe For Prostate Cancer
In the West, prostate cancer is the second largest killer of men after lung cancer. A international study recently conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School showed that men who eat the most meat and dairy products run the greatest risk of dying from the disease. Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (1998), the report confirmed that men who eat plenty of grains and nuts are the least likely to die from prostate cancer. The study was based on a survey of cancer deaths in 59 countries. It corroborated the results of earlier investigations into the role of a meat-based diet in cardiovascular disease and cancer. A higher intake of cereals, nuts and oil seeds, on the other hand, has a protective effect. Thus the plant-based diets found in many less-advanced societies are the healthiest - as long as people get enough to eat. "For prostate cancer and cancers of other sites that are sensitive to serum (blood) hormone levels, animal fat may influence the risk for cancer by raising adult's sex hormone levels", the report notes. The third-biggest cancer killer in the United States is colon cancer - another thoroughly nasty disease. Colon cancer, too, has been strongly linked with a diet high in animal fat and low in fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products.

      Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder in front of the rectum) grow and multiply uncontrollably, damaging surrounding tissue and interfering with the normal function of the prostate. The cells can then spread to other parts of the body. Mostly occurring in older men, prostate cancer is the most common form of male cancer, with approximately 186,320 new cases diagnosed in 2008. Your best chance for surviving prostate cancer is detecting it early. When found early, there is nearly a 100% chance for cure.
      Symptoms
Men with prostate cancer may have one or more of these symptoms:
      • Painful or burning urination Inability to urinate or difficulty in starting to urinate Frequent or urgent need to urinate Trouble emptying the bladder completely Blood in the urine or semen Continual pain in the lower back, pelvis or thighs

    http://www.prostatefoundation.org/
The risk of prostate cancer increases faster with age than any other form of cancer. The increasing life span of our aging population places a greater number of men at risk for this disease. One such man was my father. With little or no warning, Robert Benjamin Ablin went into acute urinary retention and was diagnosed with metastatic cancer of the prostate. This was in 1978, in an era of limited ability to diagnose prostate cancer. He was diagnosed in a late stage of his disease; he died one year later, in August 1979. Founded in his memory, the Foundation is directed toward development and improvement of methods of early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of prostate cancer. In 1970, Dr. Richard J. Ablin and his research team discovered antigens of the human prostate, including prostate tissue-specific antigen, that later became known as PSA . PSA is prostate-specific, not cancer-specific . Men need to be careful about placing too much emphasis on their PSA numbers as the test has significant limitations. Doctor Ablin was one of the pioneers and early proponents of the use of cryosurgery, and coined the term and concept of "cryoimmunotherapy", for the treatment of prostate cancer

    By Douglas O. Chinn, MD,
See end of article for June 2006 and August 2008 updates. What is HIFU?
HIFU, which stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound , was first developed as a treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and now is also being used as a procedure for the killing of prostate cancer cells. As shown in Figure 1, this procedure utilizes transrectal ultrasound radiation ), tissue in the entry and exit path of the HIFU beam is not injured. Figure 1 The published clinical experience with HIFU for this application is limited and only extends out to 5 years, and the procedure is not yet approved by the FDA for use in the United States , (HIFU is approved in Europe, China, Japan, Caribbean, Mexico, and Latin America). However, HIFU offers a powerful advantage over radiation treatment:
