The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder (the organ that collects and empties urine) and in front of the rectum (the lower part of the intestine). It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds part of the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that makes up part of the semen. Prostate cancer is found mainly in older men. As men age, the prostate may get bigger and block the urethra or bladder. This may cause difficulty in urination or can interfere with sexual function. The condition is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and although it is not cancer, surgery may be needed to correct it. The symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia or of other problems in the prostate may be similar to symptoms of prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder in front of the rectum) grow and multiply uncontrollably, damaging surrounding tissue and interfering with the normal function of the prostate. The cells can then spread to other parts of the body. Mostly occurring in older men, prostate cancer is the most common form of male cancer, with approximately 186,320 new cases diagnosed in 2008. Your best chance for surviving prostate cancer is detecting it early. When found early, there is nearly a 100% chance for cure.

    • Painful or burning urination Inability to urinate or difficulty in starting to urinate Frequent or urgent need to urinate Trouble emptying the bladder completely Blood in the urine or semen Continual pain in the lower back, pelvis or thighs

    Introduction:
Prostate cancer is a cancerous (malignant) tumor in the prostate gland, a small walnut-sized gland in men that makes seminal fluid, which helps carry sperm out of the body. The prostate is located beneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out through the penis. Prostate tumors can be benign or cancerous. With benign tumors, the prostate enlarges and squeezes the urethra, interrupting the normal flow of urine. This condition, benign prostate hyperplasia, is common and rarely life threatening. Prostate cancer one of the most common kinds of cancer in men can spread beyond the prostate gland and be life threatening. Prostate cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer in men of all ages and is the most common cause of death from cancer in men over 75 years old. Men younger than 40 rarely have prostate cancer. Men at higher risk include African-America men older than 60, farmers, tire plant workers, painters, and men exposed to cadmium. The lowest number of cases occurs in Japanese men and vegetarians.

This article is provided for information purposes only. It is not intended to be used for medical advice. Please read Cryosurgery in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer Duke K. Bahn, M.D. Department of Radiology, Crittenton Hospital, Rochester, MI Editors Note:I feel it is appropriate to state that Dr Bahn is both a colleague and professional associate of mine. Introducton Results : Patients with prostate cancer were divided into three groups. The first group had cancer confined to the prostate. These patients are usually a candidate for radical surgery. Up to three years follow up after cryosurgery showed 10 % positive biopsy rate (failure) compared to 40 - 50 % positive surgical margin rate (eventual failure) with radical prostatectomy and 35 - 90 % positive biopsy rate after radiation therapy (1,2,3,4,5). The second group were patients whose cancer had already spread outside of the prostate capsule, but did not have distant metastasis (non-confined, stage C disease ). These patients usually are not recommeded for radical surgery. In general they have had poor out-comes with traditional treatments. In this group, the reported failure rate after cryosurgery was 26 % in this series. The third group were patients who had already failed radiation therapy prior to having cryosurgery. Our data showed a 25 % failure rate in this category.

What is prostate cancer?
The body is made up of many types of cells. Normally, cells grow, divide and then die. Sometimes, cells mutate (change) and begin to grow and divide more quickly than normal cells. Rather than dying, these abnormal cells clump together to form tumors. If the tumors are cancerous (also called malignant tumors), they can invade and kill your body's healthy tissues. From these tumors, cancer cells can metastasize (spread) and form new tumors in other parts of the body. By contrast, tumors that are not cancerous (also called benign tumors) do not spread to other parts of the body. Prostate cancer is abnormal cells in the prostate gland.
Like many types of cancer, prostate cancer can be aggressive. This means it grows quickly and can spread to other parts of the body. (When cancer spreads, doctors say the cancer has "metastasized.") Prostate cancer can also grow more slowly.
