Overview
treatment for his needs.
Treatment
Mayo Clinic physicians guide each patient through several prostate cancer treatment choices. For example, your physician will determine whether surgery is required and counsel you on the type of surgery you might pursue. Your doctor will also advise you on whether or not to seek radiation therapy. If you are older than age 70, you may opt for expectant management (also called watchful waiting) if your prostate cancer is growing slowly. Mayo Clinic has a unique resource to help patients and physicians choose the most appropriate treatment. Since 1966, Mayo Clinic has compiled detailed records regarding patients who have undergone surgery for prostate cancer. The resulting database tracks the treatments provided and their outcomes over time.

Our Mission
The mission of the Prostate Cancer Education Foundation is to provide up to date information for men about prostate cancer, including its causes, treatments and outcomes. We specifically want to provide, for those who qualify, information on the rarely publicized treatment option of using lifestyle changes coupled with maximum surveillance to monitor and manage the disease. Our goal is to provide information that will enable newly diagnosed patients to consider quality of life and urgency issues when evaluating treatment options. The education is provided through lectures, videotapes and our web site, www.watchfulwarrior.com.
Why This Website?
Cancer is a deadly disease, the occurrence of which is greatly influenced by lifestyle choices. American medicine is 99% focused on curing disease and eradicating cancer. Virtually no resources are allocated to prevention and there are few proponents for curing cancers through lifestyle changes that are designed to make your body inhospitable to the various forms of the disease. Donald Mehlig was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2001 (see "My Story" Today, his oncologist and urologist coaches both agree his cancer is dormant and dying.

Aspirin May Mask Important Sign of Prostate Cancer
Filed under: Research Aspirin or NSAID anti-inflammatory drugs may significantly lower PSA levels and make it difficult for blood tests to reveal prostate cancer, according to a new study.
"These results may suggest that aspirin use decreases the ability to detect prostate cancer and may contribute to prior investigations reporting a protective association between NSAID use and prostate cancer risk," [Dr. Jay H.] Fowke and colleagues wrote. Given that many men take an aspirin a day to prevent heart attacks, this is definitely concerning and needs to be studied further. Research Comments (10)

Permanent Brachytherapy is a most appropriate treatment option for many men with early prostate cancer. The relapse-free survival rate (~85% at 10 to15 years) is equal to the best surgical results.
In 1999 Prostate Implants New Zealand Ltd were the first group to introduce prostate brachytherapy treatment as an option for men in New Zealand. We are now a very experienced team. Permanent brachytherapy is a high-tech procedure and right from the start we instigated a quality assurance program to assess the quality of the implants and thus the success and safety of the brachytherapy treatment. We have presented our data regularly at national and international meetings Brachytherapy is recognised by health insurance companies who fund it in a similar way to surgical treatments. Unfortunately it is not provided in the public health system because of the higher cost.
The advantages of brachytherapy include:
  • Short hospital stay - usually overnight Minimally invasive procedure (not an operation) Early return to usual activities Few long term side effects

Prostate Implants NZ Ltd uses facililties at Southern Cross Healthcare's Brightside Hospital, Epsom (shown above).

95. HIFU - Prostate Cancer Treatment - High Intensity Focused Ultrasound
Discusses high intensity focused ultrasound as a treatment mode.
http://www.internationalhifu.com/
Minimally Invasive Prostate Cancer Therapy High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU, is a therapy that destroys tissue with rapid heat elevation, which essentially "cooks" the tissue. Ultrasound energy, or sound waves, is focused at a specific location and at that "focal point" the temperature raises to 90 degrees Celsius in a matter of seconds. Over 7000 men, in nearly 100 HIFU centers worldwide, have already chosen HIFU with the Sonablate 500, because it is the most advanced HIFU therapy available. This website explores the experience using HIFU for prostate cancer treatment outside of the United States. Explore the site to learn more about International HIFU Centers, where HIFU is available, and to see if you qualify!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION The Sonablate 500 is not approved for use in the U.S. The Sonablate 500 remains investigational in the U.S. and is being studied for the treatment of prostate cancer in clinical trials in the U.S. FDA has made no decision as to the safety or efficacy of the Sonablate 500 for the treatment of prostate cancer.

96. Photodynamic Therapy For Prostate Cancer
Provides information on the use of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of this condition. Gives access to related studies and clinical trials.
http://www.prostatepdt.com
Photodynamic therapy for prostate cancer
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a sophisticated and powerful technique that can be used for cancer treatment, for example prostate cancer. It is a technique that enables the destruction of a target tissue via the administration of an inactive, light-sensitive agent (a "photosensitizer") and the local application of light, in the presence of oxygen. The photosensitizer absorbs light (generated by a laser) and transfers this energy to the surrounding tissues, triggering cell destruction. Tookad (WST09, Palladium bacteriopheophorbide) is a new-generation photosensitizer for Photodynamic Therapy that can be used to treat relatively large solid tumors, such as localized prostate cancer. Tookad is the fruit of the collaboration between scientists of the Weizmann Institute of Science, in Israel, and the pharmaceutical development teams of STEBA BIOTECH N.V. in Holland and France. In vivo the most prominent feature of Tookad is its fast clearance, while exclusively staying within the vascular network. Because of these properties, a Tookad-mediated PDT procedure causes extensive vascular damage, ultimately leading to tissue necrosis. Due to these unique vascular restricted effects of Tookad, the Tookad-mediated PDT procedure is also referred to as "Vascular-Targeted Photodynamic therapy", "VT-PDT" or "VTP".
