Puerto Rican culture is somewhat complex, - others will call it colorful. Culture is a series of visual manifestations and interactions with the environment that make a region and/or a group of people different from the rest of the world. Puerto Rico, without a doubt has several unique characteristics that distinguish their culture from any other. Lets consider that the people of Puerto Rico represent a cultural and racial mix. During the early 18-century, the Spaniard in order to populate the country took Taino Indian women as brides. Later on as labor was needed to maintain crops and build roads, African slaves were imported, followed by the importation of Chinese immigrants, then continued with the arrival of Italians, French, German, and even Lebanese people. American expatriates came to the island after 1898. Long after Spain had lost control of Puerto Rico, Spanish immigrants continued to arrive on the island. The most significant new immigrant population arrived in the 1960s, when thousands of Cubans fled from Fidel Castro's Communist state. The latest arrivals to Puerto Rico have come from the economically depressed Dominican Republic. This historic intermingling has resulted in a contemporary Puerto Rico practically without racial problems (very close to but not completely).

Puerto Rico today is caught between two diverse cultures and is constantly under scrutiny and judgement of visitors with only a scant understanding
of the island and its people. Outsiders and especially mainland Americans will increasingly be called upon to understand Puerto Rico and her unique
culture. Apart from the very obvious difference in the language, many of these cultural differences are harder to specify and quantify than are the formal
elements in common just mentioned. At social and cultural levels profound differences do exist between people of different backgrounds. The was the first infuence in Puerto Rican culture but it was Spanish culture which most greatly infuenced the island's history until the
beggining of this century. When the Spanish forced the Tainos into slavery, virtually the entire indigenous population was decimated, except for
a few Amerindians who escaped into the remote mountains. Eventually they intermarried with the poor Spanish farmers and became known as

Edited by Barbara Yañez, Assistant WebSite Editor In spite of having been almost completely wiped out within two decades, the Taínos left us their heritage - a legacy. Traces of Taíno physical characteristics are found in Taíno descendants clustered in areas of Borinquen. The names of many towns (Mayagüez, Coamo), foods (mamey), instruments, trees and plants are original Taíno names. We have little detailed knowledge of Taíno culture, religion and daily life. What we know comes from Spanish documents and from recent excavations. Much has been said of the Taínos lately, but it wasn't until the early 1900's that the study of the Taínos took off. The origin of the Taínos was not proven until 1950 when scientists were able to trace them through their unique white-on-red pottery . Their origins are in the Orinoco and Amazon River basins - what is now Venezuela and Guianas. The Taínos began their migration, in waves, through the Caribbean Islands in approximately 900 BC. Their origins have been traced to the Village of Saladero in Venezuela. As the years passed, the Arawakans, who landed in the Greater Antilles developed a distinct culture that we now call Taíno. This distinct culture was somewhat different from the original Arawak culture and different from that of their brothers, the fierce Caribs of the Lesser Antilles.

Speaking of clothes, you're on vacation in the tropics; you're going to want to dress informally. But travel writers say that it's a good idea to cover up your swimsuits with clothing unless you're at the pool and the beach. Also pay special attention to your attire before enjoying Puerto Rico's nightlife only tourists go out dressing like they're at a barbeque. If you want to blend in at the bar, turn up your fashion a notch and leave the culottes in the suitcase. Many Puerto Ricans speak English, but Spanish is the language of daily life. Packing a Spanish phrasebook is handy, and Puerto Ricans welcome your efforts to converse with them in Spanish. Tipping etiquette is the same here as in other parts of the United States; 15 to 20 percent is considered the standard, but more is appreciated for exceptional service.

When addressing European involvement in Puerto Rico the emphasis must be on Spain, the island's colonizer. Spanish heritage has left an indelible mark on the island and signs of this cultural exchange can be found everywhere, from the official language to the local culinary styles. The culture of European countries has also influenced the development of the performing arts on the island, especially in music. Many of the island's musical genres have their origins in the Spanish culture, which is responsible for such genres of music like

Identification. Puerto Ricans are a Caribbean people who regard themselves as citizens of a distinctive island nation in spite of their colonial condition and U.S. citizenship. This sense of uniqueness also shapes their migrant experience and relationship with other ethnoracial groups in the United States. However, this cultural nationalism coexists with a desire for association with the United States as a state or in the current semiautonomous commonwealth status. Location and Geography. Puerto Rico is the easternmost and smallest of the Greater Antilles, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Basin to the south. Puerto Rico is a crucial hemispheric access point. It was thus a valuable acquisition for European powers and the United States. Puerto Rico retains its strategic importance, housing the U.S. Army Southern Command and other military facilities. Since the 1940s, the U.S. Navy has used its offshore islands for military maneuvers that have damaged their ecology, economy, and quality of life. Puerto Rico includes the surrounding small islands, including Culebra and Vieques to the east and Mona to the west. Mona is a nature reserve and wildlife refuge under government jurisdiction. The total land area, including the smaller islands, is 3,427 square miles (8,875 square kilometers).

Although Puerto Rican cooking is somewhat Cocina criolla yautia ). The mingling of flavors and ingredients passed from generation to generation among the different ethnic groups that settled on the island, resulting in the exotic blend of today's Puerto Rican cuisine. Lunch and dinner generally begin with sizzling-hot appetizers such as bacalaitos , crunchy cod fritters; surullitos , sweet plump cornmeal fingers; and empanadillas , crescent-shaped turnovers filled with lobster, crab, conch, or beef. Soups are a popular beginning for meals on Puerto Rico. There is a debate about whether one of the best-known soups, frijoles negros (black-bean soup), is Cuban or Puerto Rican in origin. Nevertheless, it is still a savory, if filling, opening to a meal.

This small island is a nation whose culture is full of lively, rhythmic music and dance. The instruments and dances of this small nation come from all over the world. This nation may be a small island, but Puerto Rican culture is anything but small. Puerto Rico's music starts with the country's earliest history. Many years ago, some of the Caribbean's first people lived on Puerto Rico. These people were called the Taino. The Taino had a very developed culture. Taino women were as important as men, which was unusual in most cultures at the time. The Taino liked sports. The Taino even invented the rubber ball!
