"El estado libre asociado de Puerto Rico " (The Associated Free State of Puerto Rico ) is a country overflowing with vibrant culture and soulful traditions. The original name of the archipelago was Borikn, which means "land of the brave", and the original people were Tano (Amerindians). The people of Puerto Rico have endured a rocky history but have successfully maintained their uniqueness despite colonization, slavery and the eventual commonwealth association with the United States. Puerto Rico may seem like just a tropical paradise to some, but the country, which is talented and interesting, has in actuality much more to offer, including music, art, folklore, literature (including poetry and storytelling) and tradition. Although I had minimal knowledge of Puerto Rico from interactions with my sister-in-law Betsy, most of what I learned about this spectacular country was through research and an interview with Luz Hernandez, a coworker who came to the United States last semester to finish her education and to perfect her English at Kansas University. The Tano people primarily occupied Puerto Rico until 1943 when the Spanish invaded the country and took Tano brides in order to populate it. In 1508 Juan Ponce de Len became governor and colonization began. The Tano were forced to work as slaves, but much like slavery in the United States, they succumbed to disease and were replaced by African slaves. Spanish colonial rule continued until 1898 when the

The Danza was a romantic Spanish form of music and dance What is local culture? San Juan today is a thriving cosmopolitan city. A modern day 'Sanjuanero' would consider culture to be attending a performance at ' Bellas Artes ' (center for the performing arts), visiting the art galleries in Old San Juan on Gallery night, dining in one of the many popular restaurants in Old San Juan, Isla Verde, Hato Rey etc. Attending the new movie theater for foreign films on the lower side of Ballaja ( Old San Juan). NIGHT TALES WALK OLD SAN JUAN MARKET LUNCH WITH ELENA Fine Dining: try my favorites, Pikayo and Aguaviva Perhaps most revealing would be a trip to the Plaza Las Americas shopping mall, a super mall that does an tremendous business. Shops, movie theaters, food courts all would attest to the slight cultural differences found in Puerto Rico and also the similarities. You would have to leave the city of San Juan to see the 'countryside' (which is also quickly changing and leaving the past behind). The Mercado de Santurce ( market place) is a nice look around, good food too. Friday nights it's one big party with music as well.
