    The Foundations of Punk Rock
    The beginnings of punk rock are often furiously debated. This is partially because everyone has different definition of punk rock, and partially because its foundation stones are found in several places. "Punk Rock" was originally used to describe the garage musicians of the '60's. Bands like the Sonics were starting up and playing out with no musical or vocal instruction, and often limited skill. Because they didn't know the rules of music, they were able to break the rules. The mid to late '60s saw the appearance of the Stooges and the MC5 in Detroit. They were raw, crude and often political. Their concerts were often violent affairs, and they were opening the eyes of the music world. The Velvet Underground is the next piece in the puzzle. The Velvet Underground, managed by Andy Warhol, were producing music that often bordered on noise. They were expanding the definitions of music without even realizing it.

    Cable cleanup!
    Spurred by the addition of a lovely Blu-ray player from my lovely girlfriend, I decided to finally clean up the rats nest behind my entertainment center:
    Using about 40 velcro cable ties, I was able to reduce the 37-wire rat nest into this simple arrangement:
    I'd be able to get rid of 14 of those wires if I went to HDMI. I can't afford a new receiver just yet. Posted by Mike at 12:22 PM Permalink Comments var a = 1;document.write('('+a+')');

    Beautiful sentiment from Hemingway: INTERVIEWER
    Could you say something of this process? When do you work? Do you keep to a strict schedule? HEMINGWAY
    When I am working on a book or story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write. You read what you have written and, as you always stop when you know what is going to happen next, you go on from there. You write until you come to a place where you still have your juice and you know what will happen next and you stop and try to live through until the next day when you hit it again. You have started at six in the morning, say, and may go on until noon or be through before that. When you stop you are as empty, and at the same time never empty but filling, as when you have made love to someone you love. Nothing can hurt you, nothing can happen, nothing means anything until the next day when you do it again. It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through.

    Punk Music - not a fashion, not a fad - we've stood the test of time
    Punk music - and I use the term 'music' deliberately - a defiant stand against basically whatever you want to make a defiant stand about. And that is the beauty of it. Punk music was never about (and how many times have I read this) dressing up in a certain way, or bringing down governments or changing the world. For me, and just about any other punk I've ever talked to, it's basically about enjoying yourself now , here and now . If that means getting pissed out of your head and jumping around to loud music then great. If that means dressing up to shock/offend/amuse/irritate then fine. If that means getting hold of some instruments and banging away to produce an unholy cacophony then go right ahead.And that's the point - it doesn't really matter. It's whatever takes your fancy . But it does have to be one thing - exciting. And that's where the problems start. Punk was never going to change the world. It may have succeeded in rattling a few cages within the music industry and provided a new influence for some bands and some fashions, but you'd struggle to argue that it really changed much else. But that didn't stop a whole host of bands from making the mistake of putting message over music. History has shown that it's the bands who produced real quality music who have really been remembered, and that the most memorable legacy of punk has been the
