It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World , and the only one to remain largely intact. It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years, the longest period of time ever held for such a record. Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place. There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called

Reflections of Egyptian Architecture in Indianapolis Pyramids
  • July 21st, 2009 5:44 pm ET
Driving through Northeastern Indianapolis, along Depauw Boulevard, near Michigan Road and 96th Street, three giant, glass structures loom dominantly in the landscape. Nestled neatly within a 200-acre commercial development in College Park, these pyramid-shaped buildings are home to approximately 45 acres of office space and situated on a 25-acre lake. As a prominent landmark of the state’s capital, The Pyramids offer world-class comforts and a plethora of opportunities for shopping, business, travel, lodging, and education. The Art Institute of Indianapolis is also located at the Pyramids. These reflections of a civilization long lost beneath the endless sands of the Sahara Desert stand to remind society of a great nation, rich in culture, that flourished along the banks of the Nile . But when and where did pyramids originate, and what significance did they play in the lives of the Egyptian people?

    PYRAMIDS OF MEXICO
Deep within the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala and extending into the limestone shelf of the Yucatan peninsula lie the mysterious temples and Mayan pyramids. While Europe was still in the midst of the Dark Ages, these amazing people had mapped the heavens, evolved the only true writing system native to the Americas and were masters of mathematics. They invented the calendars we use today. Without metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel they were able to construct vast cities across a huge jungle landscape with an amazing degree of architectural perfection and variety. Their legacy in stone, which has survived in a spectacular fashion at places such as Palenque, Tikal, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Copan and Uxmal, lives on as do the seven million descendants of the classic Maya civilization. The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatan around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing.

Architecture History Photo Guide: Ancient Egypt The pyramid form was a marvel of engineering that allowed ancient Egyptians to build enormous structures. The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt are the only surviving monuments from the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. They were finalists for the "New World Wonders" list. Wood was not widely available in the arid Egyptian landscape. Houses in ancient Egypt were made with blocks of sun-baked mud. Flooding of the Nile River and the ravages of time destroyed most of these ancient homes. Much of what we know about ancient Egypt is based on great temples and tombs, which were made with granite and limestone and decorated with hieroglyphics, carvings, and brightly colored frescoes. The ancient Egyptians didn't use mortar, so the stones were carefully cut to fit together. The development of the pyramid form allowed Egyptians to build enormous tombs for their kings. The sloping walls could reach great heights because their weight was supported by the wide pyramid base. An innovative Egyptian named Imhotep is said to have designed one of the earliest of the massive stone monuments, the Step Pyramid of Djoser (2,667 BC - 2,648 BC).

The Egyptian pyramids are the world's largest funerary edifices , and remain one of the most enduring symbols of ancient architecture in general and Egyptian art and civilization in particular. Most of the 200 pyramids so far uncovered (only about half of which remain standing) were constructed over a thousand year period during the eras of the Old Kingdom Middle Kingdom (2134-1786 BCE). Although designed as tombs for the Kings/Pharaohs of the time, exactly how and why the pyramids were built remains something of a mystery. In any event, Egyptian expertise in handling stone had an impact on Greek art , especially Greek sculpture in stone
