PYTHONS
Pythons live near the equator, in Asia and Africa, where it is hot and wet and their huge bodies can stay warm. They make their homes in caves or in trees and have become used to living in cities and towns since people have been moving in on their territory. Being closer to people means that not only will the snakes hunt the livestock (pigs, goats, dogs, cats and chickens), it also means that they may attack people when feeling threatened, although this rarely happens. Speaking of feeling threatened, one of the biggest reasons that pythons are killed is for their large, beautiful skins. Some people actually like to wear snakeskin pants, vests, cowboy boots, and shoes! Pythons are constrictors, which means that they will ‘squeeze’ the life out of their prey. They coil themselves around their prey and with each breathe the creature takes the snake will squeeze a little tighter until they stop breathing completely. Once the heart stops the prey is swallowed whole. The entire animal is digested in the snake’s stomach except for fur or feathers. What do you think happens to the fur, feathers, beaks, and eggshells? The ‘extra stuff’ gets passed out as… you guessed it…snake POOP! Along with farm animals, pythons will feed on wild animals such as lizards, caiman (small alligator-like animals), monkeys and antelope. The larger the meal, the longer it takes to digest. This means that a python may only need to eat 4-5 times a year!

How to Take Care of Python Snakes
By greatsasuke eHow Member I want to do this! What's This? Python Snakes User-Submitted Article Python snakes are non-venomous snakes, which include some of the largest snakes in the world. Their size can range anywhere from 3 to 20 feet long and sometimes even longer. Some python snakes, such as the Burmese Python, can weigh up to 200 pounds. Most wild pythons are found in Africa, Asia, and Australia, but many species have been domesticated and made into household pets . The ball python snake is one of the most popular pet pythons found today, mainly because of its small size and docile temperament. Keeping a python as a pet is a long term responsibility, since pythons can live up to 20 - 30 years of age. If you have a python snake or are considering purchasing one, you should know that they generally do not attack humans unless startled or provoked. It is also important to note that since pythons lay eggs, the female can be aggressive until her eggs have hatched. Housing, feeding, and handling python snakes are some other consideration to take into account if you are going to keep them as pets. Difficulty:

The pattern is similar in colour, but different in actual pattern to the African Rock Python Python sebae ), sometimes resulting in confusion of the two species outside of their natural habitats. It's easy to see any messes and easy to clean. The second best is regular newspaper. It's almost as good, and although the ink isn't harmful to your snake it can be a little messy to work with because it will rub off on your hands. The regular substrates such as aspen, cypress, and the recycled paper products are good. They look a lot better than newspaper, but it's a little more difficult to keep the entire cage clean as they can hide urates and feces if you don't pay attention all the time. Plus, spot cleaning isn't as clean as changing out the entire substrate like newspaper. Finally, stay away from pine, cedar, and reptile carpets. Pine and cedar contain harmful oils that can make your snake ill, and reptile carpet can harbor bacteria and viruses.

Growing to a maximum size of 3-5 feet, ball pythons are not as large as many of the other constricting snakes that are kept as pets, and are quite docile and easy to handle. A captive bred ball python usually flourishes given the proper care. By: admin Posted: August 28, 2007

Burmese python snakes that are one of the world’s six largest snakes and are the biggest subspecies of Indian pythons are known for their size. Typically native to the Southeast Asian regions of the rain forests, they are mostly found either near water or around the semi aquatic regions. However sometimes they might also be seen on trees. These snakes can grow up to twenty five feet in length and can weigh about four hundred kgs or even more. The reason why these snakes are so long is because of the fact that they continue to grow in length throughout their life span which may sometimes exceed twenty years. They have a large number or vertebrae, that helps them grow all the more. In case of Burmese python sakes, the female species have been found to grow larger than the males.

Python snakes infesting Florida - threat to endangered species
    • February 5th, 2009 4:09 pm ET
Florida is facing a growing problem. Southern Florida is being overwhelmed by Burmese Pythons. Burmese Pythons, natives of Asia, have claimed the Florida Everglades as their home. But now it seems they are becoming a problem for the Florida Keys. They swim from the tip of Florida down to the Florida islands. These Asia natives are thought to have been released by "pet" owners who bought them when they were small who didn't realize how difficult it could be to keep up with a snake that eventually grows to about 20 feet long weighing as much as 160 pounds. There has also been some speculation that some of the snakes got into the wild after pet stores were damaged by hurricanes. MSNBC reported that there is concern that as the snakes make their way through Florida they are a growing threat to the endangered species that live there. A female snake can lay between 50 and 60 eggs at a time making it difficult to get the snake population under control. Groups in Florida are teaching residence and public workers, like mailmen, firefighters, and the like, how to capture these snakes if they are spotted.
