Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Arabic ‎; born in January 1 ), is the reigning Emir of the State of Qatar since 1995. Sheikh Hamad was the appointed Heir Apparent of Qatar between 1977 and 1995 and at the same time Minister of Defense . In the early 1980s he led the Supreme Planning Council, which sets the Qatar's basic economic and social policies. Starting in 1992, Sheikh Hamad had a growing responsibility for the day-to-day running of the country, including the development of Qatar's oil and natural gas resources. In the summer of 1995, Sheikh Hamad became Emir in a bloodless coup.

Embassy Honors Leaders and Institutions for Trade Ambassador LeBaron and Undersecretary of Commerce Francisco Sanchez presented "International Achievement in Trade" awards to five Qatari leaders and the institutions they represent for their role in growing U.S.-Qatar trade volumes by more than 380% since 2004. Student Leaders Head to America The Embassy's Public Affairs Office held a reception to honor five Qatari students departing for an intensive study tour of the United States focused on leadership. Alumni of the student leaders program, organized by the U.S. Middle East Partnership Initiative, were also honored at the event.
