    Quebec culture - Definition
As a North American society and the only society on the continent with a French -speaking majority, the culture of Quebec shows many unique features. On the whole, this culture differs from that of the 350 million English -speaking citizens of Canada and the United States who surround it, as well as from that of France History made Quebec a meeting place for cultures, where people from around the world experience America, but from a little distance and through a different eye. The culture of Quebec is connected to the strong cultural currents of the rest of Canada United States France , and Britain all at the same time. As such, it is often described as a crossroads between Europe and America. The Encyclopedia Britannica describes contemporary Quebec culture as a post-1960s phenomenon resulting from the Quiet Revolution (Révolution Tranquille), a counter-culture phenomenon supported and financed by both of Quebec's major political parties. The talk page may contain suggestions. (May 2008) The Culture of Quebec emerged over the last few hundred years, resulting from the shared history of the French -speaking majority in Quebec. It is unique to the Western World ; Quebec is the only region in North America with a French-speaking majority, as well as one of only two provinces in Canada where French is a constitutionally-recognized official language ( New Brunswick being the other). Thus, French speaking Quebecers (7.83 million) differ from that of the 25.91 million remaining citizens of Canada . For historical and linguistic reasons, Francophone Quebec also has cultural links with other North American French-speaking communities, particularly with the Acadians of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Franco-Ontarian communities in Eastern Ontario , and to a lesser extent with the French Canadian communities of Northern Ontario and Western Canada and the Cajun French revival movements in Louisiana United States . In Montreal 1,500 young lady immigrants were in actual distress, starving and freezing. The females servants were subject to the usual European conditions, including the tact understanding that they were sexually available to their male employers. The number of illegitimate (enfant du Roi) births recorded in Quebec from 1791 to 1800, was 411, legitimes are 89,343. Anglican, Bishop Mountain, insisted that English speaking, Protestant teachers be established in each parish so that each child, by degree, be led to the Protestant religion. These are the same tactics used by the Catholic to recruit converts. Lieutenant Governor Milnes took possession of the Jesuit Estates and proposed the Estates be used to implement the Mountain System of Education. The decree passed with a proviso that required a majority consent in each parish before setting up any schools. After 1763, the British suppressed the Jesuit Order by placing a ban on recruitment. Pope Clement XIV dissolved the Order about 1773 in response to increasing pressure from most of Europe and America for their clandestine methods. Bishop Briand of Quebec violated his vow of obedience and apposed the Pope by refusing to read the proclamation publicly. The last of the Canadian Jesuit priests died this year, and their considerable property and seigneuries reverted to Lower Canada. This was confirmed by London in 1831. The Jesuits would re-establish in Canada in 1842, but would never regain the property.

Quebec culture: cultured products get creative treatment at Montreal's Liberty Dairy
Dairy Foods Sept, 1994 by Gail Doeff
"Give me liberty" may be famous patriotic oratory in the United States, but whe uttered by Quebecois, chances are they want yogurt. Liberty Dairy, Montreal's cultured products specialist, was rounded in 1928 and purchased in 1978 by Abe Gomel, its current president. German dairy Borgmann owns a 26% stake in the company, providing Liberty with important ties to Europe's innovative packaging and formulation ideas. Liberty, in turn, holds a 75% stake in Toronto's Westhill Dairies. In addition to yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream and cream cheese, Liberty produces an array of unusual cultured products including kefir, quark, Greek tzatziki sauce and labneh, a Middle-Eastern yogurt spread. These unique products give Liberty a marketplace edge, but they can take a whil to catch on. Therefore, commitment plays a key role in the company's new produc philosophy.
