Facts about Eastern Cottontail Rabbit
Eastern cottontail rabbits have long hind legs and a short tail. They are the most commonly found rabbits in North America. Let us go through some interesting facts about this animal. Eastern cottontail rabbits ( Sylvilagus floridanus ) belong to the family Leporidae and genus Sylvilagus. Almost all members of this genus have a very small tail, with a puffy white underside, which resemble a cotton ball. The name 'cottontail' was derived from this feature. These rabbits belong to the Americas and are commonly found in North America
Physical Features
Eastern cottontail rabbits have a compact body with long hind legs, long ears, large brown eyes and a short tail. The fur of these animals is either reddish brown or grayish-brown in color. During winters, the color changes to more grayish than brown. The fur around their nose, underside of the tail and belly, is white in color. Almost all of them have a gray patch around the neck. An average eastern cottontail rabbit can weigh between 2 to 4 pounds. The young ones of eastern cottontail rabbits, called 'kits', have an additional white mark on their forehead, which fades out with age.
Distribution and Habitat
These rabbits are mostly found in southern Canada, eastern Mexico, central America, northern regions of South America and eastern and south-central United States. They can be commonly seen in New Mexico, Arizona and mid-west North America. Nowadays, there have been reports of occasional sightings of this rabbit in New England too. They can live in a variety of habitats, but they prefer woody, shrubby areas and open country. It is also observed that they have a preference to areas near a water source, like ponds or streams. They like places with dense vegetation, which helps them in finding cover.

Foster Bunnies:
We are members of the New Jersey Chapter of the House Rabbit Society . Because the H.R.S. shelter is frequently full, we sometimes volunteer our time and home to provide a temporary foster home for bunnies who would otherwise have languished in local humane society shelters or been euthanized. At present, we do not have any foster bunnies due to the time pressures associated with having three human children. But, we still provide financial and other support to NJ HRS and other local rescue operations and encourage you to do so as well. Descriptions of adoptable bunnies are available at the NJ House Rabbit Society Adoptions Page

  • Litter Training Revisited In consultation with Marliss Geissler, DVM, and Carolynn Harvey, DVM Choice of litter and bedding material has always been based on individual preferences. We now have reason to believe that real health factors must also be considered. WHERE QUESTIONS BEGAN We (fosterers in the Bay Area) are not used to losing rabbits due to routine spaying or neutering. We lost one this past summer. An autopsy revealed liver disease. We already knew that a defective liver is unable to filter anesthetics, and we had been screening by blood panel for this condition in rabbits over 2 years old. The fact that Sarah was only 18 months caused us to lower our age recommendations for a blood panel prior to surgery (HRJ, Vol.1 #9) As we began preoperative screening among our foster rabbits and check-ups on our family rabbits, a disproportionate number of rabbits showed elevated liver enzymes (excess liver enzymes in the blood indicate leakage from the liver, which is not handling toxins adequately). Both Tinker Bell, a large Californian, and Dinah, our gold mini-lop, showed elevated liver enzymes. The final results of an autopsy on a rabbit with a degenerative illness indicated the primary cause of death was liver disease, and Sarah had just died of liver failure after surgery.

Note: an accurate weight is essential for calculating doses. This calculator provides a mean dosage. You should not blindly accept the dosage provided by the calculator since there is a range of valid doses for any given drug. Your vet may decide to prescribe a much higher or lower dose depending on other drugs being taken by the patient, the type of illness, infection, the effect desired, etc.

FAQs HRJ Articles ... Contact Us... Encephalitozoon Cuniculi Marinell Harriman in consultation with Carolynn Harvey, DVM and Cynthia Besch-Williford, DVM, PhD Related Articles Treatments for E. Cuniculi When we first began to encounter rabbits with diminished control of the hindquarters, the assumption was that back injury, most likely from improper handling, was the cause. Although a rabbit's skeletal structure makes it very possible to suffer a broken back, this has not been the leading cause of paralysis in our foster homes. Since our fosterers have collectively rescued and lived with well over two-thousand rabbits, and our members across the country report their rabbits' health problems to us, we can report back to our readers from this growing database. How Does a Rabbit Become Disabled? Neurological impairmentin the form of partial or complete paralysis, loss of coordination, seizures, and head tilt has diverse causes. Besides trauma to the head or back, causes may include strokes (see page 9); tumors; bacterial infectionsof the inner ear, brain, spine, lungs, bones, or joints; protozoan infections; viruses; nematodes; toxins; degenerative disease; and even osteoporosis. Probably the most common but least recognized cause of rabbit paralysis is protozoal infection. A disease that has taken its toll on many rabbits across the U.S. is Encephalitozoonosis. The organism that causes it is a protozoan parasite called Encephalitozoon cuniculi, or in short E. cuniculi.

RABBIT AND RODENT TOOTH PROBLEMS AND CARE g R.S. Hines DVM PhD Lots of my articles are plagiarized and altered on the web to market products and services. There are never adds running or anything for sale with my real articles - other than my time. Try to stay with the ones with http://www.2ndchance.info/ in the URL box or find all my articles at ACC.htm Thoughts differ on the use of general anesthetics for this procedure. When they are used, the dangers of the anesthetics far outweigh the dangers of the procedure. The temperament of the individual rabbit is most important, as are the specific teeth involved.
If your breeder pairs consistently produce litters with this problem, your calcium/vitamin D ratios in the diets are off or they are genetically predisposed to the problem. It is also thought that tooth or jaw trauma in the pups can misalign the teeth. Terms Of Use Consult With Dr. Hines More Articles Home ... Foster Homes Needed
MCRS is in need of additional foster spaces. We have had an increase in intake requests from local humane societies and animal control agencies, and we would like to accomodate all of their requests for help. This happens every year over winter as people surrender outdoor rabbits due to the weather conditions. We usually see "dump season" start as early as September and continue right up to Adopt a Rabbit month in February when space usually starts to free up again. This year's season has started late, but it has hit hard and there are a lot of bunnies in need.
