Rabies is a viral disease affecting the central nervous system. It is transmitted from infected mammals to man and is invariably fatal once symptoms appear. Human rabies is rare in the United States, but still frequently occurs in many developing nations. The most recent case of human rabies in Wisconsin occurred in 2004; the latest case prior to that occurred in 2000. Who gets rabies?
All mammals including man are susceptible to rabies. In Wisconsin, skunks and bats are the most likely animals to carry the rabies virus, although rabies also has occurred with some regularity in dogs, cats, foxes, raccoons and livestock. How is rabies spread to humans?

7's Life Anaphylaxis ... 7 in Heaven Our beloved cat, Seven, was a wonderful blessing in our lives. She had to leave us too soon. We are sad and heart-broken that she had to leave after sharing just a little over 3 years of her life with us. Her memory is still alive in our hearts. We miss her very much and not a day passes that we don't think about her and pray for her. I made this website to honor her precious life and all of the joys that she brought to us. It is my hope that this website will also bring awareness of a very real risk of anaphylactic shock due to routine animal vaccinations. Contact: mb@inlovingmemoryofseven.com

Rabies remains a potentially serious public health problem in Nebraska, and is of concern to a variety of professional and occupational groups in our state, including physicians, veterinarians, farmers and ranchers. Rabies control
Medical and veterinary care providers should combine epidemiologic data on animal rabies in the region where the exposure occurred with an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the actual patient exposure when formulating post-exposure prophylaxis recommendations. Dog and cat bites represent the most common potential exposure to rabies. Vaccination of pets remains the most sensible measure to reduce human exposure. Other important rabies-control measures include stray animal control, education of the general public regarding wild animal contact, and legislation controlling the acquisition of wild animals as pets (most notably raccoons, black footed ferrets, skunks, and foxes). Criteria for assessing rabies exposure
The following definitions are provided to assist health care personnel in deciding on the need for post-exposure prophylaxis.

RABIES
What is rabies? Rabies is a viral disease that infects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) of mammals. It is almost always fatal. How is rabies transmitted? Rabies is usually transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal. The virus multiplies at the site of the bite and after a few days moves up the nerves to the brain. After reaching the brain, the rabies virus moves to the salivary gland. The presence of rabies virus in saliva enables the virus to infect another animal or person. Rabies virus usually produces behavioral changes in animals that make them more disposed to bite. This facilitates transmission to another animal. Rabies can also be transmitted when infected saliva comes in contact with an open wound, the eye, or the mouth. There have been occasional transmissions between humans through cornea or organ transplants. A scratch from a rabid animal could transmit the disease because there might be virus on its nails. Petting a rabid animal has never been shown to transmit rabies to humans. Which animals can transmit rabies?

Update T he Wolf Dog Coalition submitted all wolf and wolf dog vaccination records we had acquired to the USDA in November of 1998. We were informed in January of 1999 that the USDA considered the data significant and sufficient to allow them to make a decision about vaccine approval for wolves and wolf dog crosses. In February, after a thorough analysis, USDA made the determination that all vaccines currently approved for dogs should also be approved for wolves and wolf dog crosses. The mechanism by which wolves and wolf dogs would gain vaccine approval was with an amendment to Title 9 Code of Federal Regulations. The amendment, in essence, declared that all vaccines are approved for any member of the species Canis lupus.

Bat FAQ
Why would I want to attract bats? Bats are important indicators of a healthy environment. Because they are sensitive to high pollution and pesticide levels, they are useful as a warning sign to potential environmental problems. Also, bats can be important weapons in combating insects that are actually dangerous to humans. A small bat can capture more than 1,200 mosquitoes in a single hour! Also, bats cannot contract the West Nile Virus by eating infected mosquitoes. Besides mosquitoes, bats can help control the populations of beetles, moths, and leafhoppers. Many insects can hear bats up to 100 feet away and will avoid those areas occupied by bats. The effectiveness of bats in some areas diminishes the need for pesticides that can harm both the pests and their natural predators.

Powered by FeedBurner Aimee's Story In 2005, I took a healthy 12 year old calico house cat for a rabies booster shot. Within six months, she began to show signs of ill health - dramatic weight loss, great thirst, poor coat, bad breath, eye discharge, ear mites, frequent urination and frequent vomiting. A year later, after a roller coaster of treatment, progress and regression, in the midst of an ice storm unprecedented in Texas history, Aimee was in kidney failure and dying. I wanted her passing to be painless and peaceful.
Only one local vet was available in that moment; all the others in our area were ice-bound. She didn't know us and because my cat's "shots were not current," i.e., within the last year - and she could not risk a bite by an "unvaccinated animal" - she would gas down my cat. I could not be present. My animal was in pain. She had no hope to live. I would not prolong her suffering. So I gave my sweet, warm kitty to the veterinarian who disappeared. When she returned, she handed Aimee to me as a corpse.
