RACCOON COLOR SHEET RACCOON PICTURES RACCOON FUN FACTS RACCOON FACTS Raccoons are native to North and South America, ranging as far south as northern Argentina and as far north as southern Canada. The northern limits of their range have been expanding in recent years due to increased agricultural activity in Canada. Raccoons have been introduced in Europe and Asia as well.
Within their range, raccoons inhabit the lower elevations, avoiding the particularly harsh winter conditions of the high mountains.
There are six species of raccoons within the entire range and this info page will focus on the Common Raccoon which inhabits the United States and Canada.
The name 'raccoon' comes from the Algonquin word 'arakun' which means "one who scratches with his hands". When raccoons were first identified as a species they were given the name Ursus lotor or "washer bear". After much debate in the scientific community their name was changed to Procyon lotor which translates as "washer dog".

Managing wildlife is difficult, but managing the food supply for wildlife is one of the most critical components to successful wildlife management. Gallagher can help you effectively manage almost any food source, for almost any species during any season of the year!
  • If you are providing supplemental feed using feeders, a Gallagher Protector Fence can control the unwanted thieves like raccoons, wild hogs and livestock, while allowing only the deer and turkey access to the feeders. All for less than the cost of wire panels!
  • If you are planting supplemental food plots, the use of a Gallagher Protector Fence will control ALL species until the crop is well established and at its optimum stage; then with a slight modification, the deer and/or turkeys are allowed in and all other critters are kept out. All for 1/4 the cost of a high fence and all portable and reusable for years!
  • A 100’ x 100’ Gallagher Feeder Protector Fence costs 11% less than panels and controls raccoons and wild hogs. Cattle panels won’t stop raccoons and are easily torn up by wild hogs!

Our Beaches
South Pasadena
In 1942, eight buildings and one main street, known then as Pass-A-Grille Way, comprised our small city of South Pasadena. Tourists, travelers, and sight-seers were attracted to shimmering bluish-green waters of Boca Ciega Bay, tall Australian pines and swampy jungles that housed raccoons, wild cats, and birds of all kinds. In 1948, local businessmen decided that police and fire protection were needed for its 23 residents; hence Coreytown was born. Back in the 1920's, the William D. McAdoo toll bridge extended from the waters edge of Villagrande Avenue to the shores of 87th Avenue on St. Pete Beach . The bridge was the main thoroughfare for traffic to the beaches. In 1951, The Circuit Court dissolved Coreytown because it failed to get 25 freeholders to turn out for an election. The City of South Pasadena was incorporated on July 1, 1955 with 150 residents, one policeman and a meeting hall. Maynard Duryea became the first mayor, laying the foundation for a new era... Connecting Rural Ohio: Canter's Cave
Situated on the east side of Little Salt Creek, a small branch of nearby Salt Creek, Canter’s Cave is actually a pair of natural shelters. The valley of the stream running by the caves is very narrow, forming a typical "hollow" with high, precipitous walls, created through the erosion of the rock and soil, gradually lowering the streambed. Echo Cave, the larger of the two, measures 108 feet wide and 55 feet deep at its extremes. The floor of the cave is roughly oval and drops off sharply to a spring of water. The roof of the cave, at the opening, is about 50 feet high and gradually lowers toward the back. The lower part of the cave is covered with ferns and mosses, and the water that seeps down its wall contains various mineral substances. The buildup of sand, soil and ashes inside the shelter varies from one foot thick to four feet. Several sandstone boulders have fallen from above and lie within the shelter. The second shelter, known as Indian Cave, lays a short walk downstream from Echo Cave. It is somewhat smaller the Echo Cave, but is somewhat triangular in shape and has a low, oval extension about 30 feet long, two to three feet high and eight to sixteen feet deep. Huge fragments of rock have broken away, littering the floor of the cave.

Wild Animals - Raccoons
Expert: Jonathan Wright Question Do you know if raccoons attack cats? We have had a family of raccoons in the woods behind our house for a few weeks now. A friend of mine said that raccoons attack cats and that soon we'll have 'dead cats'. Is this true? I'm asking because one of our cats is missing right now......and I'm wondering. Can you help? Answer Dear Angie Thanks for your question. I have looked at various websites and there are several eyewitness accounts of raccoons attacking cats, but several of these attacks seem to involve rabid raccoons, which are more fearless and aggressive than non-rabid raccoons.

UF/IFAS Okeechobee County Extension Service 458 Highway 98 North Okeechobee FL Phone: (863) 763-6469 E- mail: dfculbert@ifas.ufl.edu August 4, 2004 Feature Article - for release the week of August 8, 2004 Dan Culbert - Extension Horticulture Agent Java Plum Last week an office visitor asked us to identify of a bunch of trees that appeared to be winning the weed war with Brazilian Pepper trees. She showed me some photos that were taken on her home site near the Lake , and was enjoying the taste of the fruit of this tree. I was worried that she may have been eating a fruit that may not have been edible - she got my immediate attention. This clump of Java Plums grows very close to Lake Okeechobee. Photo: Jodie Everett Once cut to a stump, these Jambolans have resprouted into 20 foot tall trees that will break apart in a good windstorm. A full sized Java Plum clump in a vacant lot here in Okeechobee. Photos (left and above) Dan Culbert, UF/IFAS A few months back, I was asked to name this same plant found growing on a vacant city lot here in town. And a few days ago, I noted that someone left a stump that has since resprouted into a 20 foot tree.

    • Raccoons have adapted well to city life. While raccoon families can be fun to watch, they can also come into conflict with property owners and residents. Raccoons are found in urban, rural and wilderness areas in almost all parts of Ontario. As omnivores, raccoons feed on grubs, insects, small rodents and other small animals, eggs, fleshy fruits (like grapes), nuts and vegetables (like corn). They will also eat from garbage and composts. In Ontario, raccoons breed from January to April; gestation is eight weeks, whelping season is March to June, litter size averages three to five young, which are mobile at seven to eight weeks old and are weaned by late summer. The cubs may stay with the mother over the winter. Occasional late births may occur in mid-summer. Raccoons are mainly active at night, throughout the year. However, they may be dormant during periods of extended cold or in very deep snow conditions.
