As a part of the voluntary nation-wide Raynet organization, Surrey Raynet exists to provide supplementary radio communications in Emergency situations that may occur in the county of Surrey. Raynet can only provide supplementary communications. Our insurance does not permit involvement in other activities, such as marshalling traffic control etc. Civil emergency control is the responsibility of Surrey Police assisted by the Surrey Contingency Planning Unit (CPU). Normally it would be the CPU who would bring Surrey Raynet to Stand-up status, although any of the User Services can directly request Raynet assistance, at any time. Surrey Raynet will assist other counties when requested. Comments and suggestions about this site are welcome and should be sent to the Surrey Raynet Webmaster.

radio communication
These days, although most around-the-world communications use satellites to relay the signals, some systems still use a special region of the Earth's atmosphere called the ionosphere. High up in the Earth's atmosphere (between 100 - 300 km) is a layer called the ionosphere . As the name suggests, some of the atoms in that layer are ionised by radiation from the Sun. If a radio signal is sent up into the atmosphere, it bounces off the ionosphere just like light bouncing off a mirror. This effect was first discovered by Marconi. This diagram shows the effect the ionosphere has. With an ionosphere Without an ionosphere With an X-ray storm Now when a solar flare goes off and solar weather has an X-ray storm, more atoms in the lower part of the ionosphere are ionised by the X-rays . That's really good in one way because it means the X-rays are absorbed and cannot reach us! However it also means that the

Underwater Radio Communication
by Lloyd Butler VK5BR
(Originally published in Amateur Radio, April 1987)
How far can we communicate underwater in the sea or in a lake. How large is the signal attenuation and what Frequency can be used? Could we use 1.8 MHz? In the following paragraphs, we attempt to answer some of these questions. INTRODUCTION
One could ask why a radio amateur enthusiast might be interested in underwater cornmunications. Well, he could be interested in diving and wish to set up a communications link with the surface, or perhaps he might be interested in radio controlled boats and wish to try his hand at model submarines! On the other hand, he might just be interested in another area of experimentation because here is a field, relatively untouched by the amateur fraternity, involving different transmission techniques, different antenna designs and different equipment environmental problems. The scope of this article concerns the transmission characteristics of radio waves underwater and the extent to which the radio amateur might make use of these characteristics. The article includes examination of the transmission options for what was lowest Amateur Radio frequency (1.8MHz) when the article was first published. Of course, some countries now have an LF Amateur band and the lower attenuation at LF now opens the options further.

Radio Communication Rules
By Andrea Austin eHow Contributor updated: September 24, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? All radio stations must conduct themselves based on the radio communication rules established by the United States Federal Communication Commission. This group is also known as the FCC. These rules are set out for both the AM and the FM stations. There are even specific rules on how to properly and legally operate a CB. Laws set into place by the FCC are always changing based on the needs and expectations from both the government and airlines that rely on radio transmissions daily.
Title 47
  • The section of law that explains the radio communication rules is in the Code of Federal Regulations. Title 47 is the section that sets out all the rules for any kind of radio station. That includes commercial stations, low broadcast stations, ones that serve small towns or college stations and public radio stations, which are ones where there are no commercials and the station must find its operating funds elsewhere.
