USA Home The Department of Radiology at the University of South Alabama Medical Center (USAMC) in Mobile, Alabama, is an academically based program serving the clinical, teaching and research arms of radiology. We serve two hospitals, three out-patients centers and two radiation therapy facilities. Our total in-patient beds number over 498 and the number of radiological procedures performed each year is nearly 200,000. Also, the department serves the radiological needs of the College of Medicine which rotates medical students through the department on an elective basis.     Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses radioactive substances, electromagnetic radiation and sound waves to create images of the body, its organs and structures for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Images can also show how effective the body and its internal organs and structures are functioning. Radiology was discovered a little over 100 years ago and has evolved into a high-tech science with state-of-the-art equipment to aid in imaging every aspect of the body. While, there has been concern over the potential harmful side effects associated with the use of radiation, it is believed that the small risks are greatly outweighed by the information gained about patients' conditions and the contribution to medical science.     Radiology Surcharge Bill Defeated Following the lobbying efforts of the New York State Radiological Society, MSSNY, New York State specialty societies, and The Emergency Coalition to Save Cancer Imaging , the Governor’s proposal to impose a surcharge on HMO’s for radiological and surgical services was not included in the Budget bills passed to date, and is not included in the Revenue Bill (A.9710-D) that passed the Assembly and Senate. The New York State Radiological Society has a long history of actively representing the specialty of Radiology including significant involvement in legislative issues. Because of our legislative successes, the NYSRS has been awarded the Governmental Relations Award from the American College of Radiology for the past six years.
