Scott Joplin (1868-1917) - Ragtime Composer
Born in Texas in 1868, Scott Joplin was one of the originators of the new Ragtime music and certainly the best-known of such composers. Like many accomplished musicians, he started early learning the piano from age 7, and was taken onboard by a music teacher who helped to broaden his musical education. Joplin left home while still a teenager and worked as a pianist in the Southern States learning many of his skills on the job. The areas he worked in were the cradle of music where cultures met and mixed, and musical styles combined and expanded. Joplin then settled in St. Louis for a number of years, playing the cornet in a band and forming his own vocal group with his brothers for which he started writing songs. He also met Arthur Marshall (with whom he was later to co-write the Swipesy Cakewalk ), stayed with his family for a time, and the pair attended higher musical education classes. Like many other ragtime composers, his main trade was playing piano in honky-tonk bars and clubs.

Social Dances of the Ragtime Era
In 1911 the newlyweds Irene and Vernon Castle found themselves in the right place at the right time, exhibiting their versions of the new American dances in a Parisian dinner club. They became immensely popular in Paris, and their fame spread through Europe. When the Castles returned to Irene's New York home in 1912, their dancing set a new prototype for Americans to follow. The Castles were a young, elegant, attractive, wholesome, married couple who had become the rage of Parisian high society. In a word, they had class. If they could dance the new ragtime dances with propriety, then all levels of society could, and did. The Castles were joined by other exemplars, such as Joan Sawyer, Maurice Mouvet and Florence Walton, all becoming catalysts in an explosive era dance mania. After two centuries of Americans dancing in the European manner, Europe was now importing the latest music and dances from America.
During the ragtime dance craze, the ballrooms were dominated by the One-Step, where a couple merely walked one step to each beat of the music. Its immense popularity was due primarily to its simplicity, so that even novices could be modern. Those who were especially fond of the new dancing had a wide variety of other steps and styles to choose from. The Argentine Tango, which had been received with great acclaim in Paris, was renowned for its flirtations with sensuality, previously forbidden in public dancing. In contrast, the Hesitation Waltz was characterized by an elegant, almost balletic grace. The

Ragtime Music - History and Influences
Ragtime sprung up as a music form towards the end of the 19th century, and this was one of a number of forms which had their roots in this time period. This increasing diversity resulted from the fusion of African and European musical ideas in the Southern States of the U.S. It wasn't so much a deliberate crafting by music scholars, but more the result of experimentation and informal learning by example, often by self-taught musicians who played in streets and bars. This informal folk music became formalised into Ragtime by composers like Harvey and Joplin who played the music to large audiences and published it so that its popularity was able to spread. Ragtime was played usually on a solo piano, an instrument which most honkytonk bars and saloons possessed. The word Ragtime means "syncopated time", the main characteristic of these pieces being the Right Hand playing a syncopated tune while the Left Hand plays a simple regular line of alternating bass notes and simple chords, often called a "two-step" and not unlike the "Alberti Bass" used in classical music by the likes of Mozart and Haydn . Despite the fact that the Right Hand syncopations were far in excess of anything produced in classical music, the structure of these pieces was nevertheless quite strict in a classical sense. They consisted of a number of contrasting 16 bar sections (usually in 2/4 time) with repetitions and returns to previous sections or a "Da Capo" (return to the begining). This structure is very similar to various march or dance forms or the classical Rondo. Towards the end of each section or phrase there might be rising bass lines, changing harmonies or accidentals to give colour and emphasis to the cadences (phrase endings).

Ragtime
Ragtime is an American musical genre, enjoying its peak popularity around the years . Ragtime is a dance form written in 2/4 or 4/4 time, and utilizing a walking bass , that is, the bass note played legato on the 1-3 beats with a staccato chord played on the 2-4 beats. Much ragtime is written in Sonata form , with four distinct themes and a modified first theme appearing in the work. Ragtime music is syncopated , with the melodic notes landing largely on the off-beats. The etymology of the word ragtime is not known with certainty. One theory is that the "ragged time" associated with the walking bass set against the melodic line gives the genre its name. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Historical context

Festival History Charles H. Templeton, Sr. Music Museum: The Business of Music Welcome to the Charles H. Templeton, Sr. Music Museum. The Museum, located on the fourth floor of Mitchell Memorial Library on the Mississippi State University campus, showcases a collection of musical instruments, recordings, and sheet music amassed over four decades by Starkville businessman Charles H. Templeton, Sr. Many of the 200 musical instruments, 22,000 pieces of sheet music, and 13,000 recordings that Templeton donated to MSU in 1987 are on display in the Museum.
The mission of the Museum is to tell a story about the "business of music," the moods music generates, and the influence of music on today's society. It allows you to explore the changes that swept the music industry and American culture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Step back into a fascinating era of changing fashion, culture, and music.
    What people are saying:
"The Charles H. Templeton Music Museum contains the most complete collection of Victor Talking Machines from the beginning in 1897 to 1930. The concept of having artifacts illustrate the "business of music in the United States" is unique and is not only important for serious students of popular music, but for history buffs, sociologists and everybody interested in knowing how music influenced this country during the entire 20th century and continuing into the 21st. In addition to the various phonographs (representing most types and companies), other visually oriented material includes an extensive sheet music collection which further emphasizes the performers and illustrates the differing styles of the day."
