42. The Ragtime Story
Eventually, syncopated notes drove sales for ragtime music so furiously that publishers labelled even unsyncopated music with the name to spur sales.

Styles of Jazz: Ragtime
The Ragtime Story
The history of ragtime is mirrored in the life and progress of Scott Joplin. This is not merely because Joplin was one of the great ragtime composers. The King of Ragtime experienced many of the elements whose confluence developed into those Euphonic Sounds which were the musical delight of America and even Europe at the turn of the century. The birth of ragtime is commonly set by the date of the first published rag. In 1895, Ben Harney published his ragtime song You've Been a Good Old Wagon in Louisville. This was the man who, a year later, brought ragtime to popularity in New York City. The first instrumental ragtime was William Krell's Mississippi Rag in January, 1897. It was not until the end of 1897, however, that Negro instrumental ragtime made its way to the publishers' presses with Tom Turpin's Harlem Rag . Having already published marches and waltzes, Scott Joplin finally published Original Rags in 1899. Relying on published works of music is misleading. This view of the birth of ragtime suggests that white men were at the forefront of sculpting the art form and that the best ragtime was committed to the printed page. Blacks were playing ragtime long before Krell's Orchestra, and making enough money from tips to live well. Even when publishers began to accept their lively, syncopated pieces, many composers rarely sold their work, having little need of money beyond the tips that accompanied performances in bars or on stage. If publication represents the birth of ragtime, then there had been a long gestation including many late night sessions when pianists and bands would rag behind closed doorsin private homes or in bars after closingwhere the most elaborate and boisterous music was often reserved for the artists' personal enjoyment.

Ragtime Music
Ragtime music first appeared in the early part of the 20th century, rising in the 1890's and fading away by 1920. It is one of the first purely American musical syles and has strong African-American influences.
Originally created by professional performers in honky-tonks and saloons, 'ragtime' evolved as a distinct style through the years as piano players began to compete with each other.
Scott Joplin
The king of ragtime music writers, Scott Joplin brought ragtime to its classic form. An American composer and pianist, he was one of the most important developers of ragtime music. He elevated the "piano rag" to an artistic level unmatched before or since.
Born in Texarkana, Texas, Joplin taught himself to play the piano as a child, learning mostly classical music from a German neighbour. In his late teens he became an itinerant pianist in the low-life districts that provided the chief employment for many of the local black musicians. He settled in St. Louis in 1885. In 1893 he played at the  World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1894 he moved to Sedalia, Missouri.

It has had several periods of revival since then and is still being composed today. Ragtime was the first truly American musical genre, predating jazz . It began as dance music in popular music settings years before being published as popular sheet music for piano. Being a modification of the then popular march, it was usually written in 2/4 or 4/4 time (meter) with a predominant left hand pattern of bass notes on odd-numbered beats and chords on even-numbered beats accompanying a syncopated melody in the right hand. A composition in this style is called a "rag". A rag written in 3/4 time is a "ragtime waltz". Ragtime is not a "time" (

A Blind Ragtimer?
February 7, 2008 - 5 Responses Many of you have heard of blind pianists like Ray Charles, George Shearing, Ronnie Milsap and Art Tatum but did you know there was a blind ragtime composer? Charles Hunter (1876-1906) was an American composer of ragtime music who was born almost totally blind.
Absorbing the folk strains of Nashville, he published his first rag, "Tickled to Death," in 1899, which became a hit. This was followed 1900 by "A Tennessee Tantilizer," and in 1901 by "Possum and Taters," "Cotton Bolls," and "Queen of Love." Of these fine rags, my favourite is the " Possum and Taters ". It is quite different than a Scott Joplin rag in that it relies more on melody than rhythm. I find the prominent single note melody that Hunter uses similar in style to that of Earl Hines "trumpet-style" piano-playing made famous in 1928.

The Birth of Ragtime
  • stock.xchng http://www.sxc.hu Although there is no accurate documentation of the origin of ragtime, there are many theories. One school of thought believes that ragtime evolved from minstrel shows songs, blacks' banjo music and the dance music of the cakewalk as well as structured European music. A final theory states that the syncopation of ragtime initially appeared in the works of the classical composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869).
