Rare Birds on Tiritiri Matangi
I have to admit that my main interest in birds is aesthetic. I like colourful birds, or at least birds which have an interesting shape or whose plumage has interesting patterns. Normally, then, this brown teal isn't a bird I'd photograph, since it's so dull and plain. However, since there are only 1300 of these birds left in the world, I made an exception in this case! I only saw this type of duck once and it was a bit difficult to photograph, not because it ran away, but because it came walking up to me too close to photograph with the lens I had on the camera. I guess I should have used my macro lens and got some good head shots, but instead I just ignored it and it returned to feeding in its pond. Normally they eat crustaceans and other invertebrates living in water, which I guess makes them carnivorous ducks, a pretty weird thought! The ducks on Tiritiri Matangi all carry radio transmitters so they can be tracked, which is why you can see a antenna coming from this one's back.

The primary function of the IRBC is the assessment of records of certain rare and scarce species. From 2004 the results are published annually in the IRBR and previously in the Irish Bird Report (IBR) from 1953 to 2003. The most recent report is the interim version for 2008 which, along with the 2005, 2006 and 2007 reports is available for download from this website as a PDF. In addition the IRBR is included in Irish Birds, which is published by BirdWatch Ireland . Irish Birds is available from Wings , the BirdWatch Ireland online shop.
Beginning with the 2004 IRBR, the IRBC changed its method of record submission and assessment. Generally speaking many regularly occurring and apparently seldom misidentified rarities no longer require formal documentation (although there may be occasional exceptions). The full list of species affected are included in

The band's initial line-up was as below, although there would be changes by the time they came to work on their third album . The first two members listed were a constant throughout the lifetime of the band. The history of Rare Bird began when Graham Field placed an advertisement for a pianist in a musical periodical. He got thirty replies and formed a group called 'Lunch'. He met Dave Kaffinetti in November 1968, and together they formulated the basic ideas for Rare Bird. In August 1969, they finally found the ideal rhythm section in Steve Gould and Mark Ashton. Two weeks later, they had signed management and agency contracts, and three weeks later, were in the studio recording their debut album. With

Learn about Rare Birds in North America
Most birders wouldn't deny that while they love local birdlife, they would all love to see one of the rare birds that the continent has to offer. How do you go about this? Where is the best place to go? If you are interested in a particular species, where is the best place to look and the best time to go? Learning about rare species is exactly like learning about those in your backyard. Learn as much as you can about them, and then have the patience to keep pursuing them.
One of the best ways to find those rare bird species you're interested in is to sign up a rare bird alert. This is very easy; sites like Birder.com allow you to select your state or province and view the rare bird alerts, or RBAs, for your area. Another good source is VirtualBirder.com, which offers a similar RBA services, as well as providing contact information for area organizations and other resources. Serious birders may want to pay for a subscription-based service which provides notifications whenever a bird of extraordinary rarity is seen any place in North America. North American Rare Bird Alert (NARBA) is one such service.
If you are fortunate enough to find (and hopefully document) a rare bird, you can report it to your state's avian records committee or to other birding organizations. Why would you want to go to the trouble of doing this? Most birders like to share their knowledge, and everyone loves to share their triumphs. But beyond this, your report will help glean very useful information. For instance, is this "rare" bird showing up more often in that particular area? Eurasian Collard Doves, for example, are now a resident bird in the southern United States, but it is not uncommon for them to be seen as far north as New York. You can help track birds' migratory and breeding patterns.

Plot
Iceland-born Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson spins this offbeat comedy about fine food and feathered friends. The owner of a failing gourmet eatery in a small Newfoundland town, Dave Purcell ( William Hurt ) is about to throw in the towel. As he raids his wine cellar and nurses his sorrows, his wacky friend Alphonse Murphy (Andy Jones) hatches a scheme to save the restaurant. They announce a faked sighting of a rare bird in the restaurant's vicinity, and soon bird watchers and even celebrities are pouring into the establishment. Dave's restaurant is so busy, in fact, that he hires Alphonse's shapely sister-in-law, Alice ( Molly Parker ), and in less time than it takes to burn a soufflé, romantic sparks are flying between the two. Unfortunately, Alphonse's schemes aren't limited to ornithological fraud. He has some hackneyed plan involving a submarine and a pile of cocaine that could bring down all that Dave has built. This film was screened at the

Conversations with the leading edge of contemporary composers
Rare Birds is a collection of conversations with world-class jazz musicians and classical composers, featuring luminaries Philip Glass, Charles Lloyd, Abdullah Ibrahim, Steve Reich, Eugene Friesen, and Sathima Bea Benjamin. These in-depth, candid interviews focus not only on the music but also on the artists. The six interviews, conducted by poet and author Thomas Rain Crowe and musician Nan Watkins, delve into the creative process, individual as well as global perspectives on the arts, the human condition, and various personal issues that are addressed in the music itself. These cutting-edge artists have singular ideas about what it means to be a composer and musician. An important addition to the documentation of modern jazz musicians and composers
