Rationalism vs. Empiricism
First published Thu Aug 19, 2004; substantive revision Wed Aug 6, 2008 The dispute between rationalism and empiricism concerns the extent to which we are dependent upon sense experience in our effort to gain knowledge. Rationalists claim that there are significant ways in which our concepts and knowledge are gained independently of sense experience. Empiricists claim that sense experience is the ultimate source of all our concepts and knowledge. Rationalists generally develop their view in two ways. First, they argue that there are cases where the content of our concepts or knowledge outstrips the information that sense experience can provide. Second, they constuct accounts of how reason in some form or other provides that additional information about the world. Empiricists present complementary lines of thought. First, they develop accounts of how experience provides the information that rationalists cite, insofar as we have it in the first place. (Empiricists will at times opt for skepticism as an alternative to rationalism: if experience cannot provide the concepts or knowledge the rationalists cite, then we don't have them.) Second, empiricists attack the rationalists' accounts of how reason is a source of concepts or knowledge.

Modern European History since 1789. I would specialize in two main areas. Firstly,19th century French social and political history, paying attention to the development of republicanism and socialism.Secondly, the conflict between state and church during this period, especially the conflict over education, anticlericalism and the role women played, for example, in the large number of female congregations that developed in the first half of the century. I am also researching material for a book on Anticlericalism in Nineteenth Century France.

After completing his philosophical and legal education at Leipzig and Altdorf, Gottfried Leibniz spent several years as a diplomat in France, England, and Holland, where he became acquainted with the leading intellectuals of the age. He then settled in Hanover, where he devoted most of his adult life to the development of a comprehensive scheme for human knowledge, comprising logic, mathematics, philosophy, theology, history, and jurisprudence. Although his own rationalism was founded upon an advanced understanding of logic , which Leibniz largely kept to himself, he did publish many less technical expositions of his results for the general public. These include a survey of the entire scheme in The New System of Nature (1695), a critical examination of Locke 's philosophy in Nouveaux Essaies sur l'entendement humain New Essays on Human Understanding ) (1704), and an attempt to resolve several theological issues in the

Empiricism vs. Rationalism The Debate Continues (Revised December 22, 1996)
Introduction The First Cognitive Revolution, developing as an aspect of the broader Scientific Revolution, stretches roughly from Galileo to Kant. In the eyes of many of its participants, the pivotal issue was whether or not all knowledge is acquired from the sensesempiricism pitted against rationalism. Since the current tendency in cultural studies is resolutely empiricist by this admittedly restrictive definition, and critical practice characterized by the continued tracing of human capacities and qualities to cultural causes, the early British Empiricists provide a particularly appropriate starting point for situating Cognitive Culture Theory, with its rationalist claims about the relevance of human universals in the understanding of cultural forms. Innate ideas Early on in the first cognitive revolution, the debate between rationalists and empiricists was phrased simply in terms of whether or not knowledge was acquired from the senses. On the rationalist side, lord Herbert argued in De Veritate (1645) that certain moral propositions are innate; on the empiricist side

Rationalism - Definition
This article is not about continental rationalism
Rationalism , also known as the rationalist movement , is a philosophical doctrine that asserts that the truth should be determined by reason and factual analysis, rather than faith dogma or religious teaching. Rationalism has some similarities in ideology and intent to secular humanism and atheism , in that it aims to provide a framework for social and philosophical discourse outside of religious or supernatural beliefs; however, rationalism differs from both of these, in that:
  • As its name suggests, humanism is centered around human society and achievements. Rationalism makes no claims that humans are more important than animals or any other part of nature . There are some rationalists who strongly oppose the anthropocentric philosophy of humanism. Atheism is the condition of being without theistic beliefs and alternatively the disbelief in or denial of deities ; rationalism makes no statement either way regarding the actual existence of god although it rejects any belief based on faith alone. Although there is a strong atheistic influence in modern rationalism, with prominent rational scientists such as Richard Dawkins holding atheistic views, not all rationalists are atheists, and there is a greater compatibility with

The Momentous Significance of Rationalism Today Paul Kurtz There is an overriding need in India today, that it encourage and cultivate the rationalist outlook. Indeed, the growth of rationalism is the key to its future development and progress. What is true of India is true of the entire planet. India will become a testing ground for the validity of rationalism for the future of humankind. A country with over one billion people, India represents rich multicultural university. It is home to pluralistic linguistic enclaves and contending religious traditions. Many go back tens of centuries, deeply ingrained in social custom. Rationalists and secular humanists ask which methods will best help to discover new truths, most successfully resolve complex human problems, and realize human needs and values? And they respond that it is by applying reason, science and free inquiry to educate the India public and the institutions of power in society. Large sectors of the Indian population disagree, being unaware of the implications or meaning of rationalism. They believe that ancient Hinduism should provide the basic framework of life. Pitted against them is Islam, representing a large minority within India and dominating Pakistan and Bangladesh, formerly contiguous with India. Other significant minorities, such as the Sikhs, Buddhists, and Christians have other faith systems. As fundamentalism grows, factionalism seems to simmer. How overcome possible future turmoil? How can social peace be maintained?
