    I. General principles:
The more extensive the vocabulary, the better the comprehension. A reciprocal relationship exists between reading and writing. Individuals are born with a mental grammar which, placed in context, allows the individual to place a meaning upon that particular word or phrase in an appropriate context. Contextual practice will assist individuals in activating that mental placement, enhancing their understanding of different materials. The more active the mind while reading, the better the comprehension and the retention of material; for example, pre-reading activities help with comprehension. The following are suggestions for pre-reading activities: Pre-Reading

Reading Comprehension
Reading is the active search for answers!
Reading Is Important:
In summary, people just aren't reading as much anymore and yet the need for reading, comprehension, and communication skills (verbal and written) has increased. The need is great for strengthening the following skills:
  • Your ability to read a variety of materials (e.g. textbooks, novels, newspapers, magazines, instructional manuals). Your ability to understand and remember what you read. Your ability to effectively communicate what you've learned from your reading.
Motivation Is Necessary:
Engaged, active readers have deep-seated motivational goals, which include being committed to the subject matter, wanting to learn the content, believing in one's own ability, and wanting to share understandings from learning. However, most people, children and adults, do not spend any significant portion of their free time reading. Without committing time to reading, no one can gain the reading skills or knowledge they need to succeed in school, at work, or in life in general. The best way to improve your reading efficiency is to read a lot.

The main idea of this passage is that myths

    (c) provide the reader with a means of escape from reality
    (d) illustrate the values that are considered important to a society Australia has many strange beasts, one of the oddest of which is the koala. Traci's 16th List of Ten: Ten Reading Comprehension Activities Posted to ACW-L, WCenter, NCTE-Talk, and TEACH on 01/10/99. After an extended holiday break, I'm back with another list. These reading comprehension activities focus students' attention on the various ways of reading a text, with an eye toward helping them differentiate among skills such as comprehension, summary, interpretation, and analysis. As I wrote these items, I was thinking exercises that I might use with students to prepare them for standardized testing (e.g., Texas' TAAS or the NY Regents Exam). These exercises alone won't prepare them for the test, but I think that the discussion that could ensue from completing more than one of these exercises on a text and talking about the skills that were used could help students become more knowledgeable about the ways that they can think about something that they read. Then I'd ask students to think about which skills relate to which questions on the tests. Originally Posted February 8, 1999 on the Daedalus Website.
