Novels
The Wild Shore (1984)
Ace/Tor
In 2047, it has been sixty years since America was quarantined after a devastating nuclear attack. Henry, at 17, wants to help make America like it was before all the bombs went off. But, for the people of Onofre Valley, on the coast of California, just surviving is enough of a challenge. Living simply on what the sea and land can provide, they strive to preserve what knowledge and skills they can in a society without mass communications. Then one day Henry meets two men who say they represent the new American resistance.
The Gold Coast (1988)
Ace/Tor
21st century Orange County, CA is full of designer drugs, freeways that glide and soar. It's a mass-culture, video-saturated world for Jim McPherson who is adrift in society. He lives his life through dreams of the past. Dennis, his dad, is an aerospace engineer involved in military research, a fact that Jim ignores until he becomes a minor urban terrorist out of boredom. Father and son, separate for so long, are finally on a collision course.

At BiblicalTraining.org we have been asked repeatedly to recommend books for a certain topic. We are glad to help. Below are all the categories of books. Clicking on a category shows all the resources in that category, and from there you can click to see the entire description of that resource. The major categories that are in all capital letters are there for organizational purposes; if you click on them you are not shown any resources but rather a description of the category. Click on the categories that are indented to see the actual resources. When you see the full posting for a book, you will be able to click through to buy the book either from ChristianBooks.com or Amazon.com. If one of these links are missing, it means it is not carried by that store. If you do so, then BiblicalTraining receives a referral fee that goes to help cover overhead at BiblicalTraining. So you find the best books, buy them at a discount, and financially help the ministry of BiblicalTraining.

BUY DREAMS IN PRUSSIAN BLUE Home Urban Shots is an anthology of short stories set in urban India, published by Grey Oak. I am the editor of the collection, and have also contributed ten of those stories. The book will be launched and be available in major bookstores and online stores from 17 Nov 2010. Dreams in Prussian Blue , published by Penguin India as one of its Metro Reads series in January 2010, is my first published novel. It is the story of a young unmarried Mumbai couple Michael and Naina, who rush into a relationship, impatient to begin the journey of their life together. When Michael goes blind in an accident, it not only wrecks his ambitious dreams of making it big as an artist, but also forces both to question the choices they have made. I hope you will find Dreams in Prussian Blue a breezy, engaging read, as well as a satisfying literary experience. The book is available in major bookstores in India and also for purchase online. Elsewhere on this website: details of my other writing credits and a selection of published short stories; a record of all the reading I have ever indulged in; a section on Indian writers in English; and a brief autobiographical sketch. Paritosh Uttam Dreams in Prussian Blue is my first published novel.

A Canada Reading List Travel
  • Hugh Brody Maps and Dreams. (Faber/ Pantheon, both o/p). Brilliantly written account of the lives and lands of the Beaver natives of northwest Canada. For further acute insights into the ways of the far north see also the same author's Living Arctic (Faber, o/p/University of Washington Press) and The People's Land: Eskimos and Whites in the Eastern Arctic (Penguin in US, o/p).
  • Stephen Brook Maple Leaf Rag Travels Across Canada .
(Picador, o/p/Vintage). Humorous but at times embarrassingly contrived account of a journey to "admire the quirky but genuine receptivity of the country's liberal-minded citizens".
  • P Browning The Last Wilderness.
(Hutchinson in UK and US, o/p). An engrossing description of a harsh and lonely canoe journey through the Northwest Territories.
  • Ranulph Fiennes The Headless Valley.
  • Barry Lopez Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in Northern Landscape.
(Picador/Bantam). Extraordinary award-winning book combining natural history, physics, poetry, earth sciences and philosophy in a dazzling portrait of the far north.

A Wales Reading List Most of the books listed below are in print and in paperback - those that are out of print (o/p) should be easy to track down in second-hand bookshops. Publishers follow each title; first the UK publisher, then the US. Only one publisher is listed if the UK and US publishers are the same. Where books are published in only one of these countries, UK or US precedes the publisher's name. Here you'll find more: Niall Griffiths's favourite Welsh books Travel and impressions
  • Dennis Abse, Journals from the Antheap
(Century Hutchinson). Abse's prose, more accessible than his poetry, succeeds in being wry, serious and provocative at the same time. Much of this volume deals with journeys in his native Wales, which he describes with verve and tongue-in-cheek humour.
  • George Borrow, Wild Wales
(Century). Highly entertaining easy-to-read account of the author's walking tour of Wales in 1854, which says as much about Borrow and his ego as it does about Wales and the Welsh, who he treats with benign condescension.
  • Giraldus Cambrensis
