v d ... e 'Reading' is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols for the intention of deriving meaning ( reading comprehension ) and/or constructing meaning. It is the mastery of basic cognitive processes to the point where they are automatic so that attention is freed for the analysis of meaning. Reading is a means of language acquisition , of communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all language, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. The reading process requires continuous practices, development, and refinement.

The Concept Phonics set includes some drills contrasting closed and magic- e words for each vowel because that program introduces the syllable structures together as concepts; those drills are not in the Multi- Sequence set. © 2006 Oxton House Publishers, LLC Made by Serif The Concept Phonics Speed Drills follow the sequence of that program. The first drills contain both closed and magic- e syllables with a and then with i , with single consonants, SSCTs, and consonant blends. The phonetically irregular words are last. The Multi- Sequence Speed Drills were designed in response to many requests from teachers who use one of the various Orton- Gillingham programs. Speed Reading Test
Reading is becoming more and more important in the new knowledge economy and remains the most effective human activity for transforming information into knowledge. If top readers read at speeds of above 1000 words per minute (wpm) with near 85% comprehension, they only represent 1% of readers. Average readers are the majority and only reach around 200 wpm with a typical comprehension of 60%. This seems surprising since most readers, actively reading work documents, newspapers, magazines, books or the contents of a computer display are practicing daily for at least one hour. With such an intense training everyone should be close to top performances.

v d ... e Speed reading is a collection of reading methods which attempt to increase rates of reading without greatly reducing comprehension or retention. Methods include chunking and eliminating subvocalization . No absolute distinct "normal" and "speed-reading" types of reading exist in practice, since all readers use some of the techniques used in speed reading (such as identifying words without focusing on each letter, not sounding out all words, not sub-vocalizing some phrases, or spending less time on some phrases than others, and skimming small sections). Speed reading is characterized by an analysis of trade-offs between measures of speed and comprehension, recognizing that different types of reading call for different speed and comprehension rates, and that those rates may be improved with practice . There are many programs available that teach different fundamentals, while some are better than others.

[PHOTO/CAPTION: Susan Ford] [PHOTO/CAPTION: Ramona Walhof] Braille Reading Speed Are You Willing To Do What It Takes? by Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof From the Editor: Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof are sisters. As you will read, between them they have a broad range of reading and Braille-teaching experience. Susan now lives in Missouri and is an active and contributing Federation leader wherever she goes. Ramona, of course, is Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind and President of the NFB of Idaho. This is what they say: Many Braille readers have never been encouraged to work to achieve good speed. Slow reading is a disadvantage throughout life and causes the reader to under-use and undervalue the reading skill. But there is no need to continue forever as a slow reader. Some Braille readers develop a speed of 200 to 400 words per minute as small children. They will retain that speed with little or no effort. Braille readers who could not attain good speed as young children, however, can do so with some work, and it is certainly worth the effort. It is also desirable for teachers of blind children to encourage good Braille-reading speed. Susan Ford developed good Braille reading speed as a small child and retains it; Ramona Walhof had fair speed as a child and has had to work to improve. Our experiences in reading Braille and teaching for years have given us some ideas which may help others in achieving increased speed. Try these suggestions and talk with other good Braille readers. You should experience significant improvement.

I almost always read history and philosophy books, and my reading speed for them is only about 10 pages every 45-55 minutes. Also, I cannot read for long periods of time. I can't read for more than an hour, or about 10-13 pages before I need to take a long break. All in all, it is hard for me to read more than 40-45 pages a day.
Do you guys think this is slow? Any ideas on how I can speed it up? What are your reading speeds?
btw, when I read a history book, I am not interested in simply "getting the gist of it." I want a thorough understanding of what I am reading. So I can't just blow through the pages.
