Not too long ago, newspapers were one of the only ready sources of fresh cooking inspiration for most homemakers. While nearly every homemaker probably had a treasured cookbook or two, folks couldn't just search Yahoo or click over to Amazon.com's Cookbooks whenever they needed a new idea! I've tried to include a broad selection of dishes in order to give you a feel for what sorts of foods were likely to be on our ancestors' dinner tables. Admittedly, some are more appealing than others! When using these recipes, keep in mind that the sometimes limited instructions tell us that the cook was already supposed to know the basics. For example, there might be no more directions to baking a

Lentil Soup
Tuesday, November 16th 2010 Eyptian cuisine is largely comprised of dishes that can be found throughout what is known as the Mediterranean Rim. Falafel, hummus, kabobs, and fresh salads are all quite popular. Ingredients such as fava beans, cucumbers, rice, lamb, veal, fresh greens, mushrooms, and yogurt are widely used in many dishes. However, there are many other foods or variations that make Egyptian cuisine unique. One example is Pigeons. They are quite popular throughout the country and are stuffed with highly seasoned rice before being placed on the grill. Soups both light or hearty also play a large role in the Egyptian diet. These are prepared with veal, lamb, beef, and pigeon. Other ingredients are beans, lentils, and onions.

March 3, 2009 - 9:16am Almost nobody in Hunan has ever heard of General Tso's Chicken, the most famous Hunan dish in America. Like many other American-Chinese favorites, the roots to China are vague but interesting. You may know the dish as General Tsuo's, or Tzo's or Tao's or some other variation. You couldn't really pronounce the name, but order it anyway at Panda Garden because of its addictiveness. Who cares if it isn't really Chinese food, like your ABC friend hinted? General Tso's Chicken became popular in America via some enterprisingly Taiwanese chefs who opened Hunan restaurants in New York in the 1970s. Hunan cuisine is traditionally very spicy, full of smoky chilis and pickled vegetables. But to appeal to American diners, the chefs started deep-frying, and sweetening the sauces. They improved upon each other's crispy chicken dishes until they got a crunchy, sweet, sour, and mildly spicy coating. You can read more about the history in Fuchsia Dunlop's NYT article , or Jennifer 8. Lee's
