These are the recipes that make people exclaim "eeewww" or "what were they thinking"? However strange these recipes (or the recipe titles) sound, they are actually really good. When I was a child I always resisted my grandmother's bread pudding. I know it was the title of "bread pudding" that made it seem unappetizing. But, when I grew up and made bread pudding I thought about all those years I wasted in disliking something I had never tried. So, I guess it is in honor of my grandmother and her bread pudding that I have written down these strange and unusual recipes...starting, appropriately with the letter "A". Lex Culinaria May 22, 2005 Roasted Garlic and Reggiano Panacotta I was inspired by a sub-par restaurant experience I recently had to make this third (and I think, best) instalment in my 3 chapter IMBB series . I ordered a divine-sounding Roast Garlic Custard, and this dish is exactly what I was hoping I'd get, but didn't. I love, love, love the way this turned out! This is definitely one of those little discoveries that makes up for all the failed attempts in the kitchen! make this as the starter for your next dinner party. Your guests will propose marriage! It is a perfect blend of cool and creamy, cheesy and garlicky. And. It spreads on warm bread like a dream! Ingredients: 1 whole head garlic, anointed with 1 tsp good olive oil, wrapped in foil, roasted and then left to cool 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup whole milk 1 crushed clove fresh garlic 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper 1/2 tsp good sea salt 1 pkg gelatin 100 grams good reggiano, grated fine Whiz cream, milk and roasted garlic in a blender. Don't worry if there are some chunks of garlic left, they add character to the dish. Heat cream in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-low heat with gelatin, crushed clove, salt and pepper. When it is sufficiently warm, and the gelatin has dissolved, stir in the finely grated cheese. When cheese is thoroughly melted, use a fork to fish out the crushed clove. Main February 11, 2005 Strange Dreams Last night I did not sleep very well, mostly (I think) due to the fact that I went from working rather intensely on something to going bed without much decompression (normally I try to get a half an hour of light fiction (Rumpole, Don Camillo, Ian Shoales, etc.) reading in to keep this sort of thing from happening). As a result I dreamt about the project all night, but not in really helpful ways. Instead I had dreams of things that were supposed to be relevant to the project, but were not at all, so that when I woke up (which seemed to be every half hour) I was just scratching my head with "huh?!? How is that supposed to make sense?" Then back to sleep only to have the same sort of thing pop back in my head. Of course I had to get up to get Amalia to Italian school, so I didn't do the logical thing, which would have been to get up, work on the project for an hour, then do a half hour of light fiction reading. Instead I turned on the radio to the classical music station. So, then my dreams turned to harpsichord playing, complete with the sort of anxiety dreams that plagued me in college: I sit down at the instrument at a concert only to find it completely out of tune, with one of the jacks stuck. I ask to borrow a tuning fork, which turns out to be some strange mobile-like contraption that takes too long to get a good pitch out of, then I forget how to tune the thing.
