About Uncle Ben
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding Einstein's Theory of Relativity, particularly in Special Relativity. I will not answer homework questions or mathematical problems that require special symbols.
Experience
I have taught physics at the college level, undergraduate and graduate, for many years including Special Relativity. I have taught at Johns Hopkins, Case-Western, and MIT. I have also served as a staff member of the Commission on College Physics, which was supported by the National Science Foundation to recommend improvements in the curriculum of college physics departments in the US. I am also the author of a textbook titled Vector Calculus, which was used at MIT in the teaching of electromagnetic theory and relativity. My research interests were mainly in solid state physics, especially the properties of metals at low temperatures. I am listed in the publication known as American Men of Science. Publications I have dozens of papers published in the Physical Review and in the American Journal of Physics.

Special relativity incorporates the principle that the speed of light is the same for all inertial observers regardless of the state of motion of the source.

Common EPIC Questions/Comments
Can't you get the same effect by using a lock-out on the shock ? Yes and no, a fully locked out bike cannot respond to trail changes, the EPIC can - without you having to re-engage the shock. I found this to be of real benefit when climbing loose or rocky sections. The back tire would spin half a turn and then grab - just like a good active FS should.
The EPIC is heavy. Compared to what ? Granted it may be 1/2 pound off of current lightweight FS designs but it's certainly in the range of many FS bikes. Compared to the Giant NRS bikes, which a lot of people compare to the EPIC, the EPIC is no heavier. I recently rode them back to back and the EPIC felt lighter. The NRS is often described as being a lightweight FS bike ? Are you kidding me ? The Giant NRS1 with disc brakes is pushing 29lbs. A Specialized EPIC Comp which runs about the same price is ~27 lbs, depending on size. Granted, to be described as a lightweight XC bike people are expecting at least 24-25 lbs bikes.
I don't want a bike that activates after the first bump - I want something fully active.

RelativitySpecial Theory
From Cassiopedia
The Special Theory Of Relativity is the physical theory of space and time developed by Albert Einstein. It is based on the postulate that all the laws of physics are equally valid in all frames of reference moving at a uniform velocity and that the speed of light from a uniformly moving source is always the same, regardless of how fast or slow the source or its observer is moving. Albert Einstein first published his special theory of relativity in 1905. It replaced Newtonian notions of space and time, and incorporated electromagnetism as represented by Maxwell's equations. This theory is a special case of Einstein's principle of relativity (hence the name special relativity) where the effects of gravity can be ignored. Ten years later, Einstein published the theory of general relativity, which incorporates gravitation. The consequences of this theory establish the following: 1) The relativistic mass increase of rapidly moving objects From Wikipedia: The term mass in special relativity is used in a couple of different ways, occasionally leading to a great deal of confusion. Specifically, mass can refer to either the rest mass or the relativistic mass. The rest mass, or invariant mass, is an observer independent quantity, while the relativistic mass, or apparent mass depends on one's frame of reference. In particular, the relativistic mass increases with velocity while the rest mass stays the same. Both of these terms are somewhat outdated. In the earlier years of relativity, it was the relativistic mass that was taken to be the "correct" notion of mass, and the invariant mass was referred to as the rest mass. Gradually, as special relativity gave way to general relativity and found application in quantum field theory, it was realized that the invariant mass was the more useful quantity and people stopped referring to the relativistic mass altogether.
