Religion has always played an important part in man's life, as it is a source of spiritual comfort in times of distress.
http://library.thinkquest.org/C004203/religion/main.htm
Religion has always played an important part in man's life, as it is a source of spiritual comfort in times of distress. The happenings in legends and myths represent an idealized version of the world that man hopes for the world to become, thus we always see that the monster who eats children is killed by the god or warrior in the end, proving the motto "Good Triumphs Over Evil" to be true. However, in real life, it is not necessarily true that the antagonist always meets with a bad end, while the protagonist triumphs; rather it is often the other way round! Under this topic, we will explore the various customs, traditions and religions that existed during the time of the ancient civilizations. We will also see how these customs, traditions and religions still apply to the modern world today and their importance in the past as compared to the present. Why the Need of a God?

Cross-National Data: Religion Indexes, Religious Adherents, and Other Data
This file assembles data from multiple sources, but many of the measures are from the ARDA’s coding of the 2003 US State Department’s International Religious Freedom Reports. This coding produced data on 195 different countries and territories (see Grim and Finke 2006 for a list of countries coded), but excluded the United States. Additional data on religious regulation and favoritism in the smaller countries not covered by the State Department Reports were provided by researchers at the World Christian Database. In addition, this project assembled (with permission) other cross-national measures of interest to researchers on religion, economics, and politics. They include adherent information from the World Christian Database, scales from Freedom House and the Heritage Foundation, and various socio-economic measures from the United Nations. Measures for religious persecution (AESTIMA) and ethnic identity (DETHNIC) were added to this file in August 2007. More Information

Ancient and Medieval Religion
There were a great many different religions followed in the ancient and medieval time periods. Some of them are still practiced today; others are not. It is hard even to know what religion is, but we see religion as any tendency to change your own behavior in accordance with supernatural forces.
Most people in the ancient and medieval world believed that there were many unseen spirits affecting how things happened. The earlier faiths all thought that there were many gods, each responsible for different things: a god of the sky, a god of water, a god of love, and so forth. Egyptian Sumerian Chinese Indian ... Roman , and German religions all had their gods organized this way, even though they had different gods. This is called polytheism (poll-eeTHEE-is-em).
But, beginning about 1350 BC in Egypt, there was a movement toward monotheism , or just believing in one god (often with a lot of weaker helper gods or angels).

  • Religion in Zaire Religion Index Data as of December 1990 2003 Report on Religious Liberty in the former Zaire Zaire: Religion Around the World: Main Page Source: Library of Congress Country Studies The majority of Zairians belong to one Christian church or another. Although statistics are imprecise, roughly 46 to 48 percent are Roman Catholics; 24 to 28 percent, Protestants; and as many as 16.5 percent may belong to the indigenous Kimbanguist Church. Islam counts only a small number of adherents in Zaire, perhaps 1 percent of the population, principally clustered in the former Maniema Subregion of Kivu (now Maniema Region) and in pockets in eastern Zaire from Kisangani south to Shaba. Most of the remaining population practices traditional African religions A clear delineation of religious affiliation into these membership categories can give a misleading picture of Zairian reality. The number of persons who can be categorized as belonging exclusively to one group or another is limited. Overlapping affiliations are more common. As with class identity or with ethnic identity, an individual Zairian's religious identity may be situational. Different spiritual traditions, agents, and communities may be sought out for assistance, depending on the situation at hand.

Weighing the souls of the dead As in the rest of Africa , the people of ancient Egypt were polytheistic throughout the Old Kingdom , the Middle Kingdom , and the New Kingdom . That means that they believed in many gods. Some of these gods were Re Anubis Seth Osiris ... Isis , and Horus . Egyptians worshipped these gods with animal sacrifices and with incense and many processions where people carried the image of the god from one place to another. People believed that all of Egypt belonged to the gods, and that the Pharaoh was the representative on earth of the gods, or maybe a kind of god himself, and so everything in Egypt sort of belonged to the Pharaoh. They thought that when you died, Anubis would weigh your soul against a feather, and if your soul was heavier than the feather (with bad deeds), you would be punished. They thought that after you died you went to a new world, just like this one, and so they put into your grave everything you would need in the next world. But, as in
