Three of the world's major religions the monotheist traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam were all born in the Middle East and are all inextricably linked to one another. Christianity was born from within the Jewish tradition, and Islam developed from both Christianity and Judaism. While there have been differences among these religions, there was a rich cultural interchange between Jews, Christians, and Muslims that took place in Islamic Spain and other places over centuries.
Judaism A brief history of Judaism Judaism is the oldest surviving monotheistic religion, arising in the eastern Mediterranean in the second millennium B.C.E Abraham is traditionally considered to be the first Jew and to have made a covenant with God. Because Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all recognize Abraham as their first prophet, they are also called the Abrahamic religions. A-Z Religion Index
The ReligionFacts A-Z Religion Index is a quick index to our articles and sections on major world religions, from ancient faiths to new religious movements. It is not comprehensive, of course, and grows regularly. This list is larger than the one on the main page , as it includes sects and denominations (like Baptist or Zen) along with major religions (like Christianity or Buddhism). ReligionFacts is very inclusive with what is regarded as a " religion " for purposes of this index and this website. Some of these belief systems may not be "religions" according to traditional definitions (they might better be called "philosophies" or "movements"), and some are even anti-religion. The grounds for a group's inclusion is simply that it offers an explanation of ultimate reality or the purpose of life. See our Big Religion Chart to compare the basics of over 40 faiths. Mayan Religion
The Maya are a native Mesoamerican people who developed one of the most sophisticated cultures in the Western Hemisphere before the arrival of the Spanish. Mayan religion was characterized by the worship of nature gods (especially the gods of sun, rain and corn), a priestly class, the importance of astronomy and astrology, rituals of human sacrifice, and the building of elaborate pyramidical temples. Some aspects of Mayan religion survive today among the Mayan Indians of Mexico and Central America, who practice a combination of traditional religion and Roman Catholicism. A Mayan calendar.

    Study of World Religions
From the earliest known evidence of human religion by Homo sapiens neanderthalensis around 100,000 years ago to the present day, religion continues to be a very influential aspect of human lives. Today, there are numerous challenges and problems faced by humans from every possible background, location and social class. Every day people must face issues of health, safety and mortality. It is because of these daily challenges that religion continues to exist. Religion is the universal tool for explaining things which we do not understand through the context the known physical world. Although there are countless religions, each different from the other, they all serve the same purpose. Each answers questions which all humans seem to be programmed to ask: Why are we here? What happens when I die? How shall I live my life? Religion helps us to transmit our values from one generation to another, and influences the way we interact with the natural environment. It teaches us how to see ourselves in light of the universe and gives purpose and meaning to life. The following pages serve as a brief introduction to several world religions. They are intended to to whet your appetite for further study and to help you understand those around you better.
