Artists by Movement:
The Early Renaissance
Centered in Italy, 15th Century
The Renaissance was a period of great creative and intellectual activity, during which artists broke away from the restrictions of Byzantine Art . Throughout the 15th century, artists studied the natural world in order to perfect their understanding of such subjects as anatomy and perspective.
Among the many great artists of this period were Sandro Botticelli Domenico Ghirlandaio Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca
During this period there was a related advancement of Gothic Art centered in Germany and the Netherlands, known as the Northern Renaissance
The Early Renaissance was succeeded by the mature High Renaissance period, which began circa 1500.

Fine Art Touch explores the phenomenon that was Italian Renaissance Art through the lives and works of important individual Italian artists and the society, culture, and significant historical events of the time.Italian Renaissance art was an evolution fueled by extraordinary achievements by Italian Renaissance artists and architects, evolving from a rich Italian artistic tradition. Renaissance artists in Italy lived within the shadow of ancient Rome. The Roman Empire was dead, and Rome was in ruins, but significant art and architecture remained, still visible to everyday Italian passers-by. The Italian city-states were at war, but Italian people as a whole had their own heritage of art dating all the way back to the time of the Caesars. Coffers overflowed feeding Italian Renaissance art and artists.

Art History:
Renaissance: (1400 - 1600) The Renaissance began in Italy because of its location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It became a center of commerce between Europe and Eurasia, thus a Cultural Diffusion point between the Europeans and the Muslims. Also, Italy was home to many wealthy families, willing to finance education. The Medici family ruled Florence and advocated the arts and sciences. These aristocrats among others would pay people to learn and create for them, spreading knowledge into the lower classes. With this rebirth of intellect came the greater interest in Ancient Greek and Roman culture that inspired the revival of Classicism. Agostino di Duccio, - 1418 - 1481

Italian Renaissance Art (c.1400-1600)
During the two hundred years between 1400 and 1600, Europe witnessed an astonishing revival of drawing fine art painting sculpture and architecture centred on Italy, which we now refer to as the Renaissance (rinascimento). It was given this name (French for 'rebirth') as a result of Jules Michelet's famous study La Renaissance in 1855, and was better understood after Jacob Burckhardt's landmark book Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy in 1860. Renaissance Art
Until the 20th century the generally accepted model for the development of the artistic Renaissance was that constructed by Vasari, writing in 1550. He gave to Giotto the credit for the rebirth of art after centuries of barbarism and structured his chronological model like the ages of man, with Giotto and his immediate heirs as representing the infancy of art; Masaccio , Brunelleschi, Donatello and Ghiberti as the experimental youth; and Leonardo Raphael and Michelangelo as the perfected maturity. Although notions of rebirth (and the previous death the term implies) and artistic progress are now rejected, and although it is recognized that Vasari was above all a Florentine writer structuring history in Florentine terms in order to set the scene for his friend and idol, the Florentine all-round artist, Michelangelo, Vasari's account is useful in that it does reflect what is a perceptible movement away from an art based on conventionalized representations of a supernatural reality towards an increasing technical expertise (in which Florence mostly led the way) in the representation of a visually convincing and rationally ordered natural world. The subject matter was still preponderantly sacred, but Christ and the saints were now conceived with more corporeality, and increasingly not in an ethereal Heaven, but at the centre of the physical world.
