Renewable Energy
Home Library US History Encyclopedia Wood, wind, water, and sun power have been used for cooking, heating, milling, and other tasks for millennia. During the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these forms of renewable energy were replaced by fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum. At various times throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, people believed that fossil fuel reserves would be exhausted and focused their attentions on sources of renewable energy. This led to experiments with solar steam for industry and solid wood, methanol gas, or liquid biofuels for engines. Attention has refocused on renewable energy sources since the 1960s and 1970s, not only because of concern over fossil fuel depletion , but also because of apprehension over acid rain and global warming from the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Renewable Energy
For decades Weyerhaeuser has used greenhouse-gas-neutral biomass to provide a portion of the energy to run our manufacturing operations. We believe that forests and related biomass can be a prime source of raw material for a variety of products that will benefit a carbon-constrained economy. We're continuing our strong tradition of ingenuity, research and sustainability by exploring ways that our assets can be used to generate renewable energy. We currently collaborate with several research universities, national laboratories and technology-based companies in research on conversion of forest products into ethanol and other biofuels.
Biofuels Joint Venture: Catchlight Energy
In February 2008, Chevron and Weyerhaeuser announced the creation of a 50-50 joint venture company with a vision to be the leader in delivering advanced biofuels from forest-based resources. The joint venture, Catchlight Energy LLC, will research and develop technology for converting cellulose-based biomass into economical, low-carbon biofuels. Catchlight Energy unites Weyerhaeuser’s expertise in innovative land stewardship, resource management and capacity to deliver sustainable cellulose-based feedstocks at scale with Chevron’s technology capabilities in molecular conversion, product engineering, advanced fuel manufacturing and fuels distribution.

subscribe Highlights Renewable energy is energy derived from natural processes that do not involve the consumption of exhaustible resources such as fossil fuels and uranium. It produces few or no hazardous emissions or pollutants, and has minimal impact on fragile ecosystems.
The main types of renewable energy are hydroelectricity, biomass (organic matter), geothermal, solar, wind and biofuels. The most used form of renewable energy is traditional biomass like burning wood. The market is growing for many forms of renewable energy with conservation of water and energy the main reasons for using these technologies. Alternative fuels, such as ethanol, can be developed to power hybrid vehicles in order to d...

Renewable Energy
What is “Renewable Energy”?
Renewable energy comes from sources that are essentially limitless. Some sources of renewable energy include the wind, the sun, flowing water and the heat of the earth. In addition to being plentiful in supply, many forms of renewable energy yield zero greenhouse gasses, and therefore hold promise not only for our energy future but also for preserving the climate.
Our Commitment
Pepco is committed to increasing the amount of renewable energy sources used to generate electricity for its customers. Today, that percentage is small due to the lack of available renewable resources. However, we are committed to seeing that percentage grow – up to 20% by 2020 in some states. We recognize that renewable energy has the potential to provide us with cleaner air, a more diverse energy portfolio, and less dependence on foreign fossil fuels. In the near future, through progressive investment in tested and reliable renewable energy solutions, Pepco aims to reduce its use of fossil fuels as well as the greenhouse gasses that generating energy from them produces, all while keeping energy affordable and dependable for our customers.

(Originally published in BioScience Vol. 44, No. 8, September 1994)
Solar energy technologies, paired with energy conservation, have the potential to meet a large portion of future US energy needs
The United States faces serious energy shortages in the near future. High energy consumption and the ever-increasing US population will force residents to confront the critical problem of dwindling domestic fossil energy supplies. With only 4.7% of the world's population, the United States consumes approximately 25% of the total fossil fuel used each year throughout the world. The United States now imports about one half of its oil (25% of total fossil fuel) at an annual cost of approximately $65 billion (USBC 1992a). Current US dependence on foreign oil has important economic costs (Gibbons and Blair 1991) and portends future negative effects on national security and the economy. Domestic fossil fuel reserves are being rapidly depleted, and it would be a major drain on the economy to import 100% of US oil. Within a decade or two US residents will be forced to turn to renewable energy for some of their energy needs. Proven US oil reserves are projected to be exhausted in 10 to 15 years depending on consumption patterns (DOE 1991a, Matare 1989, Pimentel et al. 1994, Worldwatch Institute 1992), and natural gas reserves are expected to last slightly longer. In contrast, coal reserves have been projected to last approximately 100 years, based on current use and available extraction processes (Matare 1989).
