NV Energy Surpasses 1 Gigawatt of
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is not a new phenomenon for NV Energy. The company signed its first contract for geothermal power in 1983, and just this past year, we surpassed the renewable energy threshold of one gigawatt (1,000,000,000 watts) under contract. NV Energy’s longstanding renewable energy commitment has resulted in one of the most diverse and extensive renewable energy portfolios in the United States. Additionally, Nevada’s Portfolio Standard is one of the most aggressive in the nation, with a requirement that at least 25 percent of the company’s retail energy sales be derived from renewable energy resources by 2025. Noteworthy are innovative provisions of the standard allowing up to 25 percent of sales from energy efficiency and a minimum requirement of 6 percent of the standard to come from solar resources. NV Energy also is actively involved in promoting customer-installed facilities through our RenewableGenerations program offering rebates for solar, wind and hydro projects. To date, over 600 projects totaling more than four megawatts are installed at homes, businesses, public buildings and schools. The company has awarded more than $15 million in rebates through this program. NV Energy is committed to renewable energy, and continues to develop our plentiful resources for the benefit of our state, our customers and the environment we all share.

The legacy of Herman Scheer
The words of Mahatma Gandhi - "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win"- are a fitting introduction to Herman Scheer's latest book named "Der Energethische Imperativ" (subtitled 100% Now: How the Complete Switch to Renewable Energies Can Be Realised) It sums up his passionate conviction that it was technically and economically feasible for renewable energy to fully replace fossil and nuclear energy within just a few years, if the political will existed. He saw political intransigence as the biggest barrier to achieving this.
Herman Scheer was a true architect of the renewable-energy age, he lived as he preached, powering his home with a windmill. The sad demise of Herman Scheer last week is a great loss to the people who are passionate about renewable and solar energy.
Scheer was known internationally for his pro-environmental politics. He was a supporter of renewable energy and wrote many books and articles outlying his ideas. Two in particular, "A Solar Manifesto" and "Solar Economy," are considered leading publications on renewable energy.
Supporting renewable energy earned Scheer many international awards over the years, including the alternative Nobel prize, the Right Livelihood Award, in 1999. Herman Scheer will be remembered for ever due to his contributions to the renewable energy world.

73 Utah schools to get solar panels to generate energy, teach children

A wet and gloomy Monday, the sun nowhere in sight, was the setting for the announcement at Hillside Middle School that 73 solar panels will be installed atop 73 schools across Utah.
The solar photovoltaic arrays will be placed on the roof of at least one school in each of Utah's 41 school districts to generate renewable energy for the schools and teach schoolchildren about energy efficiency and alternatives.
Wells Fargo to fund $100M in solar projects
Wells Fargo will invest more than $100 million to fund the development of solar photovoltaic power projects by GCL-Poly subsidiary GCL Solar Energy Inc. throughout the country.
The investment will be made to the end of 2011.

RENEWABLE MANUFACTURING FOR AMERICA
State of Current Federal Policy: Renewable energy is manufactured energy. Wind turbines and photovoltaic modules are assembled from a series of component parts. According to early surveys by REPP, roughly 70% of the lifetime labor required to manufacture, install, and operate these projects comes from the manufacturing phase. Any program to capture the full potential of renewable energy to provide jobs and a renewed domestic manufacturing sector has to support renewable manufacturing. Such a program does not as yet exist.

This is what it should look like.
Where we are headed with out using alternative energy sources...
Energy is the ability to do work. While energy surrounds us in all aspects of life, the ability to harness it and use it for constructive ends as enconomically as possible is the challenge before mankind. Alternative energy refers to energy sources which are not based on the burning of fossil fuels or the splitting of atoms. The renewed interest in this field of study comes from the undesirable effects of pollution (as witnessed today) both from burning fossil fuels and from nuclear waste byproducts. Fortunately there are many means of harnessing energy which have less damaging impacts on our environment. Here are some possible alternatives:

More than 700 Attend 2010 REV Energy Conference and Expo
Sheraton Conference Center in Burlington, Vermont
We wish to thank all of our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and attendees for helping us make the an outstanding success!
For the first time, the conference featured two full days of content, including a day of 101-style workshops followed by an in-depth industry conference. We were proud to co-host a gubernatorial debate between Brian Dubie and Peter Shumlin on Vermont's energy future and to host dinner speaker Michael Klare. Special thanks to VELCO President Chris Dutton, who stepped in at the last minute to deliver a great keynote address about everything from smart-grid progress to regional distribution issues and more when scheduled speaker Soren Hermansen (traveling from Denmark) was rained in at the NYC airport. Hermansen arrived in the afternoon, and we hope some of you were able to meet him. We'll post Hermansen's presentation on our website soon.
