Reunion Geography
The island of Reunion is 63 kilometers (39 miles) long; 45 kilometers (28 miles) wide; and covers 2512 square kilometers (970 square miles). Reunion is a volcanic island with similar geography and climate to the island of Hawaii. The Piton de la Fournaise, a volcano on the eastern end of Reunion, rises more than 2631 meters (8632 ft) above sea level. It has erupted more than 100 times since 1640 and is under constant monitoring. It most recently erupted on April 4th 2007. The Piton de la Fournaise on Reunion is created by another volcano hotspot, which also created the Piton des Neiges. The Piton des Neiges volcano, the highest point on the island at 3070 meters (10,069 ft) above sea level, is north west of the Piton de la Fournaise. Collapsed calderas and canyons are south west of the mountain. The slopes of both volcanoes are heavily forested. Cultivated land and cities like the capital city of Saint-Denis are concentrated on the surrounding coastal lowlands. These volcanoes have given Reunion rich soil and agriculture, especially sugar production, is very widespread. Reunion also has three calderas (collapsed volcanoes): the Cirque de Salazie, the Cirque de Cilaos and the Cirque de Mafate. The island has a very unique geography and is great for not only the beach but also hiking.

INTRODUCTION
Background: The Portuguese discovered the uninhabited island in 1513. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, French immigration supplemented by influxes of Africans, Chinese, Malays, and Malabar Indians gave the island its ethnic mix. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 cost the island its importance as a stopover on the East Indies trade route. TOP OF PAGE

Reunion
With its various landscapes including extinct volcanoes, spectacular waterfalls, blue lagoons, golden and dark sand beaches, all squeezed on such a small island, Reunion remains unknown to most of the tourists.
Reunion – Geography
Located west of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Reunion is a beautiful mix of high mountains, golden beaches and deep canyons. The island’s topography is marked by the presence of the two extinct volcanoes , Piton des Nieges, also the highest point on the island (3070m), and Piton de la Fournaise. The slopes of the volcanoes are covered with dense forests and the valleys formed between them offer breathtaking scenery. Another characteristic image here due to the presence of the volcanoes is the calderas , the most important ones being the Cirque de Salazie and Cirque de Cilaos. As a result of its location the island has a tropical climate with two seasons and slight variations in temperature and precipitation with elevation. The island has a few important rivers like the Langevin River and also has its own Niagara Waterfall, a small but picturesque waterfall created by a spring flowing though a caldera.

Saint-Pierre is exposed to the sea and the mountain alike. The harbour and beach make the town a genuine seaside resort. South of the town, the visitor will find a beautiful wild coast and other beaches at Grand Anse and Manapany. Mountain slopes are gentler than in Saint-Denis and rise less abruptly towards the lush inland countryside of Le Tampon, Entre-Deux and the hills of Petite-Ile.
The greatest attractions of the South are its wild coast (from Grand Bois to Le Tremblet) and its forests (Saint-Philippe, Mare Longue, Basse Vallée). The scenery in the Heights is splendid, from the flowery slopes of Le Tampon to Saint-Joseph’s upper reaches. Petite Ile is a charming, peaceful and flowery district.
Its name derived from the fact that it faces the only (tiny) island off Reunion coast. Grande Anse is a wild beach, quite different from those of the west coast (follow the sign on the right hand-side just after Grand Bois from Saint-Pierre).
