REXX Programming
SUMMARY:
Suitable for the BCS Mainframe Technology professional Exams for level 1 Assistant (Technology and Support) and Level 2 Engineer AUDIENCE: Operators, analysts, system administrators, and technical support personnel who have a need to write, understand, or maintain REXX programs. This course applies to z/OS, VM/CMS, TSO, and NetView environments. PREREQUISITES: Delegates should meet at least these minimum requirements:
Some previous programming experience or programming training (in any language) is desirable.
For students in the z/VM environment, the ability to create and modify files using the XEDIT editor is necessary.
For students in the z/OS environment, familiarity with z/OS TSO concepts and the ability to create and modify files using the ISPF editor is necessary. DURATION: 3 days. Hands on. OBJECTIVES: REXX is a general purpose, high-level, procedural language that can be used for interactive programs and offers significant advantages over older EXEC/EXEC2 (VM) and CLIST (TSO and NetView) interpreted languages. REXX is similar to PL/1 or Pascal in syntax and structure, but has quite a few implementation unique capabilities. This class is available for z/OS and z/VM.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

The idea for Ascii Mailer came from a REXX program called Oi! written by Chris Drake and installed on some of our systems at work. I don't know anything about REXX Ascii Mailer is written in Perl . You can see the source code here . The parse_form routine was written by Matt Wright of Matt's Script Archive fame. The ascii images (such as they are now) are from Chris Drake's original program. All of the rest is original code. If you like Ascii Mailer, let me know. Or maybe if you think that billions of dollars of fibre optic cable could be better used, I'd like to know that too! Rexx: Power Through Simplicity
by Howard Fosdick
Here's a quick quiz. Which scripting language ...
  • Runs on virtually all platforms and operating systems? Enjoys a strong standard to which all implementations adhere? Comes in object-oriented versions that are upwardly compatible with the standard procedural language? Is known for combining ease of use with power?
  • Through the first three questions you might well have answered "Perl," but question four is a stumper. Powerful and useful as it is, few might claim that Perl is a language that is easy to learn or master. Rexx is the answer. Rexx was the first widely used scripting language. Though IBM invented it 25 years ago, it may come as a surprise that this language is more popular today than ever. There are now nine free and open source Rexx implementations. These run under virtually any operating system on any platform. All but one meet the Rexx language standard, and each has optimizations or extensions for a specific purpose. For example, two are object-oriented, one integrates with Java, and still others target handhelds, Linux, or Windows. Rexx's worldwide user community numbers in the hundreds of thousands and is strongest in the new Europe. This community conducts active online forums in many spoken languages and produces tons of free tools and interfaces. That a language of this impact garners almost no recognition in the American Linux open source community is truly amazing.

The Truth about REXX is out there. And in here.
REXX is a scripting language found in many platforms, including MVS, OS/390, Z/OS, CMS, VSE, CICS, Windows, Unix, Linux, AS/400, and others.
REXX is generally interpreted, which makes development easy, but gives a performance penalty.
    Compilers are available for REXX.
REXX has all the facilities of a complete programming language.
REXX is particularly good for processing data strings.
REXX is not datatyped: all variables may contain any type of data.
REXX data is either character (string) data or numeric.
There is only one type of numeric data in REXX.
Numeric data in REXX is processed internally in floating decimal format, so conversion does not take place.

REXX programming In this chapter we focus on the development of stored procedures using REXX. REXX is used quite often for a quick application solution, and is the favorite language for system programmers and DBAs. As of DB2 V8, you do not have to order the REXX interface feature; the REXX interface is included in every DB2 license. The performance of REXX programs accessing DB2 tables is improved in V8 in the case of programs issuing large numbers of SQL statements. The improvement is due to two changes: DB2 V8 avoids loading and chaining control blocks for each REXX API invocation; they are now built only at initialization time and then pointed to for the successive API calls. This has reduced the CPU time. The REXX exec points to the DSNREXX code. The change now loads the modules and keeps them in local application address space for the duration of the job whenever they have not been preloaded in the link pack area (LPA). This avoids accessing the modules again from disk. In this chapter we refer to two simple applications accessing sample tables: The first for retrieving employee information for a specific employee number The second for retrieving a list of employees for a specific department If you are not familiar with the REXX/DB2 interface, refer to "Coding SQL statements in a REXX application" in Chapter 9 of
