Robotics
Robotics is the engineering science and technology of robots, and their design, manufacture, application, and structural disposition. Robotics is related to electronics, mechanics, and software. The word "robot" was introduced to the public by Czech writer Karel Čapek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), published in 1920. The term " robotics " was coined by Isaac Asimov in his 1941 science fiction short-story "Liar!"
History
Stories of artificial helpers and companions and attempts to create them have a long history. In 1921, Czech writer Karel Čapek introduced the word "robot" in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots). The word "robot" comes from the word "robota", meaning, in Czech, "forced labour, drudgery". [

Robotics Engineering CPU Introduction In the Robotics Engineering CPU , students will gain an understanding of both robotics and engineering/design principles. This is accomplished somewhat through the reading materials provided in the course, but is mainly achieved through direct, hands-on activities. Students will construct and program a predetermined robot manipulator, then create one of their own. In this process, students will work through the design process; build the manipulator; program the robot; then test, revise, and update the robot for a final trial run. Understanding these processes is important in any sort of design work, but is especially useful in preparing for contests in which robotic design and implementation are judged. Featured Careers

A review by Peter D. Tillman
Advertisement It has been twenty years since humanity was driven from Earth and the Inner System by a runaway Bloom of mycora, a [nano] "technologically generated lebensform" (TGL) that has eaten all of Earth's life, and most of its crust. Humans have retreated to the moons of Jupiter and the asteroids the Immunity (Munies) and Gladholders, respectively where constant vigilance is required to keep the Mycosystem at bay. The mycora are generally thought to have been created in an industrial accident, but human malice or an extrasolar origin can't be ruled out. The viewpoint character (who isn't the strong point of the book, but is more believable than his girlfriend), is a part-time newsnet columnist on Ganymede, a member-state of the Immunity a rather Teutonic, no-nonsense culture, contrasted nicely with the more laid-back, Latinate culture in the Gladholdings. The Gladholders appear to be more technically advanced.

Image: Carnegie Mellon NREC The National Robotics Engineering Center, (NREC) at Carnegie Mellon University is at the forefront of partnering man with technology to improve safety and costs. Among the completed projects are, the Caisson Construction 3D Modeling system used in the construction of the Nagasaki Bay Bridge, the Micro-Inertial Navigation Technology (MINT) a satellite free tracking system and a Strawberry Plant Sorter for California's growers. The Caisson Construction 3D Modeling system:
The NREC developed the Caisson 3D Modeling system for the Kajima Corporation to support the placement of a 42-meter deep caisson in solid bed rock in order to construct the Nagasaki Bay Bridge. The specifications included the ability to see through dust and effectively map and display the interior of the caisson digging area to personnel operating below ground. According to NREC the Caisson 3D system improved safety in the construction of the bridge and reduced labor costs by employing tele-operations during the caisson cutting and removal process. The system's efficiency replaced the often time dangerous task of inspectors entering pressurized excavation sites to perform the same job.

Automatic Label Applicators
All SCPE automatic label applicators are designed to apply die-cut pressure sensitive labels at speeds of up to 2100 linear inches per minute. Each applicator comes complete with a DC stepper motor, a powered rewind and a 12-inch diameter label roll capacity. Under microprocessor control, all label applicators are accurate to within 1/32 of an inch.
Southern California Packaging Equipment automatic label applicators are specifically designed for industrial applications. Our microprocessor controller gives flexible yet accurate label placement, while stainless steel and anodized aluminum provide protection from corrosive environments. Solid drive construction ensures even pressure across the entire web, resulting in extremely accurate label placement. Durability and user friendliness are the dominant factors inherent in all SCPE designs.

The company has started on 1999 to project a micro injection machine able to produce 3D labels, patchs and badges in fluid plastics automatically and needless the considerable quantity of employed as used in the countries where the cost of the labour is not a considerable factor.
At beginning of the year 2000 the first prototype was installed in Italy and, still today, it is in full production together with 3 machines models MCRJ serieB and 3 MCRJ serieC. All working with 4 injectors at precision and repeatability of mm. 0,01.
The machine self, is able to scan the mould, ask the operator to define (very easyly) the vectors, memorize the job for infinite future use and inlay up to 4 colors (or different materials) automatically. Just one operator can supervise 2 machines with an automatic production of thousands and thousand pcs per shift. The high precision and repeatability avoids quality rejects and save materials and time.
The last generation, MCRJ serie D has been engineered to duplicate the production (per machine) applying a double injection head with 8 injectors (electronically controlled) operating simultaneously on 2 different lines of the jobs. The new engineering is prepared to link with an automatic input and output of the moulds and automatize the entire production procedure.
