Filed under: Mineral of the day regular postings The tourmaline mineral group is chemically one of the most complicated groups of silicate minerals . It is a complex silicate of aluminium and boron, but because of isomorphous replacement (solid solution), its composition varies widely with sodium, calcium, iron, magnesium, lithium and other elements entering into the structure. Tourmaline belongs to the trigonal crystal system and occurs as long, slender to thick prismatic and columnar crystals that are usually triangular in cross-section. Interestingly, the style of termination at the ends of crystals is asymmetrical, called hemimorphism. Small slender prismatic crystals are common in a fine-grained granite called aplite, often forming radial daisy-like patterns. Tourmaline is distinguished by its three-sided prisms; no other common mineral has three sides. Prisms faces often have heavy vertical striations that produce a rounded triangular effect. Tourmaline is rarely perfectly euhedral . An exception was the fine dravite tourmalines of Yinnietharra, in western Australia. The deposit was discovered in the 1970s, but is now exhausted.

Welcome to Breccia Web
I am Bob Beers , a Nevada rockhound in some of my spare time. I put this page together to collect web links about Nevada minerals so I can find them when I want to. It is called "Breccia Web" after the highly disorganized rock found throughout Nevada - country rock that has been lightly crushed and recemented over time. Pretty messy looking stuff. If this webpage is useful to you despite my organizational techniques, great!!! I sure like it. This page has been under construction long enough to almost be measurable in geologic time. All links open up in a new browser window.
Before venturing out to the Nevada outback to hunt for cool rocks, understand the dangers that abandoned mines pose.
About Nevada
This is an experimental site in preparation for an Online Nevada Encyclopedia Amongst its geologic treasures, Nevada has many volcanoes. None are currently active, but some have been active in very recent geologic time - seconds ago, in a geologic sense. Therefore, when rockhounding in Nevada (especially the area north and west of Las Vegas) it's always a good idea to keep an eye on the Volcanic eruption forecast . When planning longer trips into the outback, you may be able to get a feel for the shorter-term by

Filed under: Rockhound stories regular postings rockhounding maps By now, I was getting tired and some people had already headed back to camp. With no
other dogs around and few people, I let Sesame Pooch off the leash and she raced over the
crusty rhyolite hills with glee. If only I could have stolen some of her energy! The biggest
diggings area was across a deep wash and we had to move laterally to find an easier path
down through the wash and then back up to the diggings. The white ashy dirt had been
well churned and many pieces of agate encrusted rhyolite littered the ground. Some agate
had nice colorations and fortification patterns and I spent some time surface hunting
before heading over the hill and across a large plain to investigate some ashy looking
areas further away.
