Ceres is the Roman equivalent to Demeter She was said to be the goddess of agriculture especially grains. Drawing of Cupid by Adolphe William Bouguereau Cupid is the messenger of love under Roman mythology. In Greek mythology he was known as Eros. He was the son of Mercury (the messenger god) and Venus (the goddess of love). Cupid is usually depicted as a winged baby boy, with a bow and two kinds of arrows to cause mischief. One would invoke love , the other hate . Venus would use her son's power to gain revenge, as when she planned to have the beautiful Psyche (a mortal) fall in love with the ugliest man in the world. This backfired when Cupid pricked himself with his arrow. Because of this, Cupid fell in love with Psyche instead. Later she gained immortality when she married him and her job became sorting out family love problems. The myth of Cupid and Psyche was retold by C.S. Lewis

Jump to: navigation search The city of Rome , which eventually became the hub of all things Roman, is saturated with mythology even from its very inception in which historians place around 750 BC. Roman mythology is largely based on the belief in or worship of multiple gods or deities, which is known as Polytheism Polytheism was widely accepted and practiced during Rome's early history. Leaders looked to the gods for guidance and wisdom. Many men and women dedicated their lives to serving these gods in their temples. The word comes from the Greek words poly theoi , meaning "many gods." In polytheistic belief, gods are perceived as complex beings of greater or lesser status, with individual skills, needs, desires and histories. These gods are not seen as being omnipotent, but rather human-like, having specific skills and abilities.

Roman Mythology
The roman mythology is the combination of the beliefs, the rituals, and the observances of supernatural occurences by the ancient Romans from early periods until Christianity finally completely replaced the native religions of the Roman Empire. The religion of the early Romans was so changed by the addition of numerous and conflicting beliefs in later times, and by the assimilation of a vast amount of Greek mythology, that it cannot be ever reconstructed precisely. This was because of the extensive changes in the religion before the literary tradition began.
The origins of those myhts were in most cases unknown to the early Roman writers on religion. On the other hand classical writers, such as the poet Ovid in his Fasti (Calendar), were strongly influenced by Hellenistic models, and in their works they frequently employed Greek beliefs to fill gaps in the Roman tradition.
