    Roman mythology
    Jupiter, Mars, Quirinus
Mars was the war-god, the protector and the source of Roman power. He was considered as a deity of the fields - the genius of spring flora. Quirinus was his double.
    The goddess in Roman mythology
The worship of Vesta was one of the most respected and the wider spread worship on the Palatin. She was a patron and defender of the hearth and home.
The other Latin goddess - Vener - the patron of orchards, gardens, abundance and bloom of the nature was worshiped relatively late.
The temple of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva
The erection of the Capitol - a temple sacrificed to the trinity: Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, was the essential event in the history of Roman religion. This building was erected according to Etruscan patterns. The tradition is that the Tarquinius build it and in Roman religion, it is a moment when the images of gods started to appear.
Minerva was also one of the Italian goddesses adopted from the Etruscans. She was worshiped as a patron of the craft in Rome.

    Roman Mythology
Although the ancient Romans were inspired by the mythology of their neighbors, the Greeks, they also had their own myths and traditions. The tale of the founding of Rome by Romulus, as well as the stories of heroism and duty to the city (such as that of the Horatii, or of the brave Cloelia), are all part of Roman legend. However, Roman myths tend to have a slightly different focus than Greek myths, for many Roman tales seem to have a more historical flavor. To be sure, the legends of Greece were often regarded as having some basis in reality (for example, the Trojan War as a real historical event), but they are somehow more endowed with lyricism, the innate imagination of the poet than the somewhat pragmatic tales of the Romans. That being noted, we invite you to read about the Roman myths, and come to your own conclusions about these compelling stories of heroes and gods.

INTRODUCTION Many years ago the Greeks thought up strange stories about gods and mighty humans to explain the nature of the universe. Plato called these stories myths Most of the myths involved heroic quests, immortality, fierce creatures, epic battles, rape, love affairs, quarrels, friendship, betrayal, revenge, suckling infants, despair, punishment, reward and thunderbolts. The gods had great powers but were not flawless. These stories were passed down through the centuries. When Rome took control of Greece the Romans adopted the gods and gave them Latin names. They also created a few myths of their own including The Founding of Rome. In the following pages I will tell you about the first gods from the beginning of the universe in The Creation I’ll write about Hermes who achieved many feats at the age of one day old in Hermes the Baby Rascal You will hear about Persephone who was kidnapped by her uncle and the earth’s first winter in The Rape of Persephone In The Gorgon’s Head Medusa will be transformed into a hideous monster and then killed.

    Roman Mythology
Roman mythology can be considered as two parts. One part, largely later and literary, consists of whole-cloth borrowings from Greek mythology. The other, largely early and cultic, functioned in very different ways from its Greek counterpart. Nature of early Roman mythOne might almost say that the archaic Romans did not have myths. That is to say: until their poets began to borrow from Greek models in the later part of the Republic, the Romans had no sequential narratives about their gods comparable to the Titanomachy or the seduction of Zeus by Hera. What the Romans did have, however, were:
a highly developed system of rituals, priestly colleges, and "clusters" of related gods a rich set of historical myths about the foundation and rise of their city involving human actors, with occasional divine interventions.
Early mythology about the gods The Roman model involved a very different way of defining and thinking about the gods than we are familiar with from Greece. For example, if one were to ask a Greek about Demeter, he might reply with the well-known story of her grief at the rape of Persephone by Hades. An archaic Roman, by contrast, would tell you that Ceres had an official priest called a flamen, who was junior to the flamens of Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus, but senior to the flamens of Flora and Pomona. He might tell you that she was grouped in a triad with two other agricultural gods, Liber and Libera.

Roman Mythology, various beliefs, rituals, and other observances concerning the supernatural held or practiced by the ancient Romans from the legendary period until Christianity finally completely supplanted the native religions of the Roman Empire at the start of the Middle Ages.
The original religion of the early Romans was so modified by the addition of numerous and conflicting beliefs in later times, and by the assimilation of a vast amount of Greek mythology, that it cannot be reconstructed precisely.
Because extensive changes in the religion had already taken place before the literary tradition began, its origins were in most cases unknown to the early Roman writers on religion, such as the 1st-century BC scholar Marcus Terentius Varro.
Other classical writers, such as the poet Ovid in his Fasti (Calendar), were strongly influenced by Alexandrian models, and in their works they frequently employed Greek beliefs to fill gaps in the Roman tradition.

Hey, welcome to this site on Roman Mythology. The ancient Romans used mythology as a combination of religion and stories and fables. For each significant event in their lives, a prayer or sacrifice was made to a specific god or goddess depending on the event. These events included birth, death, and the harvest, among others. There were religious rituals and festivals held throughout the year that often, but not always, had to do with the gods. For some people the festivals themselves were more important than the worshipping of the Olympian gods. Roman myths were not neccesarily regarded as fact, but more as stories with messages to live by.

What the Romans did for us was to encourage Godliness on a grand scale.
You were spoilt for choice. Far from destroying the beliefs of conquered countries, they were actively encouraged - and in many cases absorbed. The Romans just couldn't have enough Gods. In fact sometimes they appear to have invented some for special occasions. They gave the Greek pantheon a major makeover and fancy Latin names. The major deities were built up into the Planet Suite: Mars, Venus, Jupiter, etc. A good means of identification. We've attempted to point out the Greek vs Roman equivalents and hopefully haven't missed out too many. Most of the Latin words still in use today seem to have a God connected to them. Discipline = DISCIPLINA, Fauna = FAUNUS, and Fortune = FORTUNA. Just add an 'a' or an 'us' to the end of a Latin word and see what God you get. With the romantic Romans, the more Gods the merrier. And some of their Gods could be very merry indeed. Meanwhile, in Tuscany, sandwiched between Greek and Roman dynasties, the Etruscans or Etrurians seemed to have lived life to the full if their frescoes and artifacts are anything to go by. Which is pretty much all we can do as Etruscan remains a dead language.

    ROMAN MYTHOLOGY
Roman Mythology can be described as the mythological beliefs of Ancient Rome.
Roman mythology can best be described in two sections:
Early Roman Mythology is Roman in culture and nature. The second section of Roman Mytholohy comes later, and consists of borrowings from Greek mythology.
The Romans had no sequential narratives abour their gods comparable to the Titanomachy or the seduction of Zeus by Hera until their poets began to adopt Greek models in the later part of the Roman Republic. What the Romans did have, however, were:
a highly developed system of rituals, priestly colleges, and pantheons of related gods. a rich set of historical myths about the foundation and rise of their city involving human actors, with occasional divine interventions.
Roman mythology had its own unique way of thinking about their gods. Roman mythology had a distinct and complex interlocking between gods and humans. Religion of the early Romans found itself later on being constantly added to by extra beliefs.
The absorption of neighboring local gods took place as the Roman state conquered the surrounding territory. The Romans commonly granted the local gods of the conquered territory the same honors as the earlier gods. In many instances the newly acquired deities were formally invited to take up their abode in new sanctuaries at Rome.
