Culture of Romania
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Romania has a unique culture, which is the product of its geography and of its distinct historical evolution. Like Romanians themselves, it is fundamentally defined as the meeting point of three regions: Central Europe Eastern Europe , and the Balkans , but cannot be truly included in any of them. The Romanian identity formed on a substratum of mixed Roman and quite possibly Dacian elements, with numerous other influences. During late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the major influences came from the Slavic peoples who migrated and settled in near Romania; from medieval Greeks and the Byzantine Empire from a long domination by the Ottoman Empire from the Hungarians and from the Germans living in Transylvania. Modern Romanian culture emerged and developed over roughly the last 250 years under a strong influence from Western Europe, particularly French and German culture.
Romania's history has been full of rebounds: the culturally productive epochs were those of stability, when the people proved quite an impressive resourcefulness in making up for less propitious periods and were able to rejoin the mainstream of European culture . This stands true for the years after the Phanariote Ottoman period, at the beginning of the 19th century, when Romanians had a favourable historical context and chose the Western way of life, mainly

    CULTURE The Romanian language, although developing over the centuries in difficult historical conditions, is as Latin as any other Romance language and, like the culture as a whole, continues to exhibit a remarkable vitality. This fact is perhaps paralleled by some of the Modernist tendencies in the Romanian fine arts: the sculptor Constantin Brancusi, a promoter of absolute Modernism coupled with a firm sense of classical Mediterranean values, had great international influence early in the 20th century. Romanian poets and writers, too, have operated in a cultural tradition somewhat different from that in neighbouring countries; in architecture, the Bucharest television centre is but one example of another Modernist trend.

    Identification. Location and Geography. Romania is in southeastern Europe at the north end of the Balkan peninsula, bordering Ukraine and Moldova to the north, Hungary to the northwest, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. The land area is 91,699 square miles (237,500 square kilometers). The Carpathian Mountains cover about one-third of the country; they surround the Transylvanian Plateau and divide it from the other two main regions: Moldavia in the northeast and Walachia in the south. The Transylvanian Alps in the central region contain the highest peak, Mount Moldoveanu. The eastern and southern regions are characterized by rolling plains. The Danube River stretches through the country for six hundred miles, forming its southern border with Serbia and Bulgaria and emptying into the Black Sea in the east. It is a source for irrigation and hydroelectric power. Serious environmental problems include soil erosion and water and air pollution from unregulated industrial development. Because of economic hardship, the government has been slow to enforce laws that place restraints on industry.

    Culture and Education In order to have a correct idea about the Romanian culture, we have to mention, from the very beginning, that it includes the following elements:
    • the Geto-Dacian tradition, kept, to a certain extent, in the popular culture ( costumes, dances, ceramics etc.) associated with other traditions borrowed from the migrating people with whom the Daco-Roman population came into contact after the withdrawal of the roman armies from the Northern region of the Danube (271 AC).
    • the Latin element - which is very strong and prevailing in all the spheres of the manifestation of the folklore culture and that of the "cults" , starting with the language and ending with the phenomena which are specific to art;
    • the early presence of Christianity on the current territory of Romania , so that, taking into account the fact that this process coincided with the formation of the Romanian people itself, we can assert that the Romanians were not christianized, but were born Christians.
    • The Romanian culture created a pattern by comprising all of these sources of spirituality, a model it enriched during the subsequent ages of evolution. The consciousness of its Latinity represents the characteristic feature of the Romanian cultural pattern.
    This cultural pattern with its specificity can be noticed in all cultural manifestations like literature, architecture, music, theatre, filmmaking. A special attention must be paid to Romanian folklore, one of the richest in Europe, part of the Romanian culture, which constitutes together with other cultural manifestations the voices of authentic Romania. These voices of many creators of genius of Romania succeeded, in the course of time to make a "beautiful country" become an "unique country" too.
