    Stop and Grow the Roses
"Of all the flowers, me thinks a rose is best." - William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)
There's something about roses. More than 1.2 billion cut roses are purchased in the United States every year, most of them on Valentines Day. (Mothers Day comes second.) Millions of gardeners cultivate roses, some exclusively. In fact, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Rose Societies
As the symbol of love, roses have inspired musicians, poets and authors. Shakespeare alone mentioned roses more than 50 times in his poems and plays. Cleopatra reportedly decorated her palace floors in rose petals and Confucius had a 600-book library devoted to rose gardening (see For the Love of Roses ). Forget pearls and diamonds, the Greeks would adorn themselves with garlands of roses for festive occasions. Napoleon's wife Josephine loved roses so much that she grew more than 250 different varieties. Roses have also been around for a long, long time. Archaeologists have discovered the fossilized remains of wild roses that date back more than 40 million years.

    3. Rose Gardening
Many people are fearful of rose gardening, because they believe that roses are difficult to grow and require very precise conditioning. But, if you follow four

A rose garden with red roses, white roses, and yellow roses.
    http://www.bestbuy-s.com/rose-gardens/
The Rose Garden A Rose Garden With Red Roses, White Roses, and Yellow Roses It is easy to grow roses. Mainly I buy the cheap ones from where ever and plant them. Put water and fertilizer on a rose bush and you will get a return of beautiful roses in almost any color. The rose bush to the left I bought for $1.98 on sale at K-Mart. It is at least fifteen feet tall now. I am far too disorganized to know the scientific names of the roses. When people ask, "What kind of rose is that." I reply with a straight face, "That is a red rose." Or a yellow rose or a white rose. Whatever the case may be. If you are on this page in hopes of learning how to grow roses. I can give you some tips. If you want the science you are going to have to check the links at the bottom of the page. There are about a million different kinds of roses and more new varieties every year. I look for the sales after the first bloom of planting is done and the garden stores start to have their sales. Make no mistake. You do NOT have to be a Master Gardener to grow roses. You do NOT have to dump a ton of money into it for insecticides, fertilizer, and construction materials. For instance. I built the 6x8x8 rose arbor for about $75.00. They wanted over $300.00 for one a quarter of the size in the garden shops. All it takes are some 4x4's, cement, and sweat. How to Choose the Right Roses for Your Garden
There's an enormous selection of roses that you can grow in your home garden. With such a large selection to choose from, your decision may seem more like a difficult task than the fun that it should be. In order to make this process easier, there are a few important factors that you should consider prior to choosing your roses.
    Color
How will the color of your roses effect your garden? Look at different catalogs, as well as your neighbors' gardens, to get an idea of the colors you like best. While the color of your roses might not seem very significant, you should consider the colors of other plants and flowers that your roses will share the garden with. Will the assortment of colors look nice, or will they clash? For some, color-arrangement is a priority; while for others, it's no big deal.
    Size
In addition to color, the size of the roses you choose is very important. Consider the height of your roses at full-growth. If the roses grow fifteen feet in height, will they look unattractive in your garden? Remember, the size of roses vary. While some roses may grow up until eight feet, other can grow up to twenty feet in height. Measure the area of your garden prior to choosing the roses you want to plant. Compare your width and height measurements with roses you're looking to purchase. Your roses should have an ample amount of space to grow as well as plenty of exposure to the air. If you only have a small amount of space to dedicate to roses, you may want to consider growing miniature roses. These roses do not take up a lot of space and are easy to plant and care for.

    Design
Plant breeders have given us roses that grow well under difficult conditions and bloom almost continuously from early summer to frost. Proper plant nutrition is easy and simple to provide with the use complete plant food that supplies all the vital elements needed from the soil. Insect and disease problems can be prevented easily with regular use of insecticide-fungicide that controls most chewing insects, sucking insects, and fungus diseases. With these aids, you can grow roses successfully. GOOD STOCK: Buy good plants, preferably No. 1, two years old, field grown and budded plants. Plants that are not pruned should have 3 or more heavy 18-inch canes. Pruned plants should have canes with a diameter of at least 1/4 inch at the top. Plants potted in tar paper pots are preferred by many gardeners since they can be transplanted most any time of the year.
