1. Origins Of Traditional Rug Hooking
Short article about the origins of making rugs from strips of worn out clothes and textiles by using a hand held hook. Author Joan Moshimer.
http://www.wcushing.com/rug_hooking_origins.htm
Origins of Traditional Rug Hooking by Joan Moshimer NOTE: By the term "Rug Hooking" we mean the craft which employs a simple hook and strips of fabric - the strips cut from worn out clothing, curtains, etc. which was developed to give them new and useful life. The hook in one hand above the foundation material and the strip held beneath in the other hand, the hook begins pulling up loops from the strip which when repeated many times close together forms the surface of a rug. A distinguished American architect and scholar in the 1920s and 30s, William Winthrop Kent became interested in the hooked rugs of the humble housewives living in the New England states and neighboring provinces of the Canadian Maritimes, recognizing that he was looking at an art form with much distinction and potential. He wrote three carefully researched, well illustrated informative books on rug hooking - now unfortunately out-of-print. In the first, called THE HOOKED RUG, he set himself the task of finding out just when and where rug hooking began. The earliest evidence of the craft that he could find can be seen in a photograph on page 6 of his book, showing a small mat dating from the 6th century that is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This basic form of hooking apparently was practiced by the Copts from the 3rd to the 7th century AD. The Copts were descended from the ancient Egyptians. From his description of the Coptic process it seems as if their work was remarkably similar to our present day hooking. They made a fabric "which was based on the appreciation of the artistic possibilities of loops of colored wool left standing above the surface of the basic material"

Rug Hooking Wool
Fabric Links Guidelines: Choosing Wool Fulling Wool Cutting Strips What Wool is Right for Rug Hooking? Weight The weight of the wool chosen for rug hooking is important not only for the "loo k" of the finished product but for the "ease" of actually creating the loops. Wool flannels and wool suitings usually retain their soft hand and firmness after fulling. Most wool coating has a thickness and/or napped finish that makes it prohibitively heavy after fulling. While beautiful, a wool challis is usually too lightweight and flimsy even after several fulling treatments.
Denverfabrics.com has invested in sophisticated equipment to determine the per square yard weight of each fabric we sell. While this information helps a seamstress compare fabrics and determine which is suitable for the intended garment, this weight is especially important for rug hooking. As a general rule weights of 5.5 oz. to 10 oz. per square yard are suitable. However, yardage slightly over or under this suggested range can be a perfect choice after it is fulled. Note: Denver Fabrics is now listing the liner yard (running yard) weight in addition to the square yard weight but only for those wools suitable for rug hooking.
Finish and even dye color can effect how a wool reacts in the fulling process. Weight alone can not be the only guide to suitability for rug hooking. Any wool choice whether recycled or new, is an experiment until fulling, stripping and hooking is complete.

Rug hooking is both an art and a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp.

    Rug hooking
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Latch-hook Jump to: navigation search Rug hooking is both an art and a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap linen , or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle (usually wood) for leverage. In contrast latch-hooking uses a hinged hook to form a knotted pile from short, pre-cut pieces of yarn. A craftsperson creates a hooked rug by pulling lengths of cloth, usually wool , through a woven fabric, usually burlap Wool strips ranging in size from 3/32 to 10/32 of an inch (2 to 8 mm) in width are often used to create hooked rugs or wall hangings. These precision strips are usually cut using a mechanical cloth slitter; however, the strips can also be hand-cut or torn. When using the hand-torn technique the rugs are usually done in a primitive motif. Sarah Nickerson is a famous rug hooker from Maine who uses this technique. Designs for the rugs are often commercially produced and can be as complex as flowers or animals to as simple as geometrics. Rug-hooking has been popular in North America for at least the past 200 years.

R u g H o o k i n g Homepage Museum Quilts Publications I bought the book Hooked Rugs by Ann Davies and Emma Tennant, read it and started. As rug hooking is unknown in Germany, I could not buy any tools, such as a hook or a frame. I used a drawer without a bottom and a crochet hook - to tell the truth, I used five, which I destroyed by hooking hard. In 1997 we visited the Book Fair again and the lady at the stand told me to write to Ann Davies to ask for a traditional hook. Since then, Ann Davies has helped me a lot. She did not only sell me hooks and books, but she encourages me to continue.
