WHAT IS RUG HOOKING?
Designer Wools and Rug Hooking Buy Wool Contact Jane Old Mill on the Eastern... Rug Hooking is one of America's oldest art forms. I fell in love with the art of rug hooking as a little girl and feel that it has been a good friend during all the stages of my life. Through my teaching and association with the rug guilds, I have been fortunate to meet special and talented individuals everywhere I go in the rug hooking world. If you are new to this world, please join us. There are classes available world-wide.
Thank you for visiting me here Most of the rugs are original designs however a few are my interpretation of another designer's drawing. All the wools are original formulas developed through years playing in the dye pot Click on the wool fan picture to see my special designer wools.
My wool creations often happen when I'm playing around in the dye pot looking for just the right combination of color for an particular motif in a rug. No two wools are exactly alike! These wools are also great used in quilting and applique. I teach rug hooking locally in Maryland and Virginia and in many states all across the United States and Canada. I have been told that I am not truly traditional one of my students says my work and teaching style are " traditional with a twist." Those of you who know me well may say that twist is called pixelating!!!!!!

Original Rug Hooked Fiber Art by Artist Elizabeth Black
Hand crafted in the rich folk tradition, these elegant hooked rugs and wall hangings provide a rich, thick texture you'll treasure for years. I use only the finest wool cut into strips, then worked into loops with a traditional rug hook through heavy cotton backing. The wools are carefully hand-dyed if necessary to achieve the desired colors and shadings. These exacting techniques allow for fine detail and subtle shading in your special one of a kind design. Select the colors, shape, size and type of pattern you desire and I'll work with you to create a most elegant rug or accent piece. You'll find hooked rugs complement a spectrum of decors...from classic to contemporary, even primitive. Adorn floors, walls, or furnishings-in your home or office-with your custom made work of art! Rug Hooking
Rug hooking is a craft wherein you make rugs from loops of yarn that are pulled and woven through a stiff base of linen or burlap. This is done with a unique crochet hook that is mounted onto a wooden handle. The woolen strips usually range in size from 3/32 to 10/32 of an inch. Over the last couple of centuries rug hooking has become famous in North America. However, the process was first developed in England. Rug hooking began as one of the most effective methods in which to use an excess piece of cloth. As such, this craft was basically done by those who were downtrodden members of society and suffered from a lower standard of living. Herein this craft was skillfully applied to weave rugs and carpets. Whenever this craft first began yarn was used but eventually yarn and fiber scraps began being used throughout the world. This is especially true in the United States of America. Today though rug specialists actually prefer to use cut wool strips so that they can provide buyers with a very different look and texture. This tradition of using cut wool strips actually got its start during the 1930s. Of course, the proper blend of experimentation and the in-depth technical know-how has greatly improved since then. There have been some fresh techniques of rug hooking explored along with some entirely new materials. All of this has merged together in order to prevent the process form becoming extinct.

The Pittsburgh Rug Hooking Frame
Many people ask, "Why should I use a rug hooking frame, and what makes a good frame?". My answer - The Pittsburgh Rug Hooking Frame - because your creative rug hooking efforts deserve the best tools. Period. A good frame, such as the one we have developed and offer here, stretches the rug's backing so that the rug hooker can see the holes more easily. It also keeps the backing taut while each loop is pulled up from below. A good frame such as ours also uses "gripper strips" (see the detailed drawing below). These gripper strips prevent the hooked areas of the rug from being crushed or distorted - as often happens with a "hoop" type frame - and makes the hooking go much faster. A good frame should be portable, lightweight and sturdy - and not break the bank. Even though it may be your largest single investment in rug hooking, we can assure you that our Pittsburgh Rug Hooking Frame will meet your most demanding needs and prove to be a very worthwhile investment. As a rug hooker with 22 years experience in the craft, I knew the frustration of using hoops that pressed and stretched my hooking unmercifully and frames that were bulky and unsuited to my hooking needs. Any craftsperson knows that their work progresses more smoothly and more quickly with the right tools. All of the rugs and pillows that are featured throughout this website were created with the Pittsburgh Rug Hooking Frame. Please find below more
