Rug Hooking Instructions
By Michelle Powell-Smith eHow Contributor updated: September 22, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Rug hooking pulls loops of yarn through a mesh backing to form a soft pile using a simple latch hook tool. By changing colors, geometric patterns or images can be created. The final appearance of a hooked rug will depend upon the density of the rug, the yarn used and the length of the fibers on the front of the rug. You can use a hooked rug as a rug, wall hanging or pillow front.
Materials
  • It is quite easy to get started rug hooking. You will need a frame or hoop that mounts to a standing frame or your table. An inexpensive embroidery hoop combined with a C-clamp from the hardware store works for this project. You will also need a rug hook and scissors. Many rug hooking kits are available and are an excellent option for beginners. If you prefer to work without one, you can start rug hooking using easily accessible materials. Burlap is a traditional backing material. Coarse linen and larger scale needlepoint mesh work nicely for this activity. Wool yarn or narrow strips of skirt or pant weight wool fabric are ideal for the surface of your hooked rug.

    Craft Site Directory: Rug Hooking
    www.craftsitedirectory.com/rughooking/ - Remember to
Rug hooking is a technique by which rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn, wool roving, or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, or another similar textile. The loops are pulled through the backing material using a hand tool with a hooked end, similiar to the end of a crocheting hook, but the tool is shorter and usually has a thick wooden base for leverage. Although some use the term latch hooking to describe rug hooking, the technique for latch hooking is actually different. Latch hooking uses a hinged hook to form a knotted pile from short, pre-cut pieces of yarn. With either technique, rug hooking or latch hooking, patterns can be formed on the surface of the rug by using different colored yarns, wool roving, or strips of fabric, for the various sections.
This section contains rug hooking how-to information and free patterns, rug hooking supplies, kits, and patterns available for purchase, as well as shops with hand hooked rugs available.
