... Russian News
Russia is a country about 1.8 times the size of the US occupying the vast area between Europe and the North Pacific Ocean. It has an area of 10, 672,000 sq. miles (17,075,200 sq.km) and a population of almost 150 million people. From Eastern Europe to Northern Asia Russia spans 11 Time Zones. Occupying a large territory in Europe and Asia Russia is spread over all climatic zones except tropical. It takes over 8 hours by plane to reach from Moscow to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. West of the Ural mountains from the Black Sea in the South to the Arctic Ocean lies a broad plain with low hills where the historical core of the Russian nation is located. East of the Urals from the border with Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia to the Arctic coast lies Siberia - a scarcely populated area covered by coniferous forest, swamps and tundra in the north and mountainous terrain in the south. The country possesses a wide array of natural resources including major deposits of oil, coal, natural gas, many strategic minerals, diamonds and timber. The economic zone along the 23,533 mile (37,653 km) long coastline (Arctic and Pacific Oceans, Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas) holds significant reserves of fish and oil and natural gas on the sea shelf. Most of the country has a so called harsh continental climate characterized by a big difference between summer and winter temperatures (it gets indeed very cold in Siberia during winter, but it is also very hot in the summer). Russia's geographical location presents a significant obstacle to development - dry or cold climate, terrain, distance and remote location from major sea lanes, all these factors contribute to the situation when large parts of the country have almost no population and development. Russia has only 8% of arable land.

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Colonies_of_Ukraine/russian_geography.htm
Russian Geography From Our Father's Harvest by Chaim Freedman The exact location of the Jewish Agricultural colonies in the Yekaterinoslav Government was a particular problem prior to the publication of the Our Father’s Harvest since they could not be identified on any map available at the time, A map was drafted based on the recollections of William Komesaroff of Melbourne as to the relative alignment of the colonies and the time required to travel by wagon between them This map was confirmed with minor adjustments by Rokhel Luban. The map was verified upon the discovery of Jewish Agriculturists on the Russian Steppes (Israel 1965) which contained a map of all the colonies during the Soviet period, although no source was quoted. In 1983 a detailed large scale map was discovered in the library of the University of Texas by Michoel Ronn whose family came from the region. This map was printed in 1955 in the USA by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, and was based on various Soviet maps as well as aerial intelligence photography. Most of the colonies were readily identifiable and there was a fairly close correlation with the map I Our Father’s Harvest. The basic adjustment required was to move the northern block of colonies (the Novozlatopol group) about ten miles southwest. The large village of Gulyai Polye was thus to be located due west of Novozlatopol and directly north of Pologi, which was about tem iles further west than shown. Kolonya Mesiritch (Mezhirich) was located Southeast of Gulyai Polye, due west of Krasnoselka. Nechaevka and Sladkovodnaya were to be interchanged.

Comprising much of eastern Europe and northern Asia , it is the world's largest country in total area Due to its size, Russia displays both monotony and diversity. As with its topography, its climates, vegetation, and soils span vast distances. From north to south the East European Plain is clad sequentially in tundra , coniferous forest ( taiga ), mixed and broad-leaf forests, grassland ( steppe ), and semi-desert (fringing the Caspian Sea ) as the changes in vegetation reflect the changes in climate. Siberia supports a similar sequence but is taiga. The country contains 40 UNESCO Biosphere reserves

    Russian Geography
As the largest country in the world, Russian has a very diverse geography. Northern Russian extends into the Arctic Circle. This area is primarily tundra, and covered by forests, with thousands of rivers and lakes.
From Eastern Europe to Nothern Asia Russia spans 11 Time Zones.
Climate ranges from temperate to Arctic continental. There are areas of Russia on the northern borders that are always covered with snow, but most areas have standard summer and winter seazons. There are areas in the South that will only see snow once or twice a year.
Russia has many mountains. The largest are:
  • The Ural mountains - cover 2,500 miles of eastern Russia The Caucasus mountains -they cross the southern part of Russia, from the Black Sea to the Caspia Sea
  • From the western boarder to the Ural mountains is the North European Plain. This is a large rolling plain with rich soil and grasslands. Three quarters of the Russian population lives in the cities and towns of western Russia.

Russian Geography And Geographic Differences Among Russians
The former Soviet Union covers eight time zones. To put that into perspective, that is roughly the distance between London and San Francisco. In other words, that is equivalent to crossing the Continental United States plus the Atlantic Ocean.
That’s a big piece of real estate – the largest country in the world.
For this reason, it makes sense to focus on a particular area when making your search inquiries.
For example, let us say you are writing to women from Kyrgyzstan and Belarus, respectively. Kyrgyzstan is a four-hour plane ride from Moscow in a southeasterly direction. Belarus is a one-hour plane ride from Moscow in a westerly direction.
It is like dating a woman from San Diego and a woman from Toronto at the same time. It can be done, but it is not easy. It is easier to concentrate on one geographic area such as Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, or Southern Russia.
It is always difficult to generalize about people or geographic areas. My purpose for mentioning this area of consideration is to give you an idea of why you may want to concentrate on one geographic area versus another.
For example, why would you want to consider a woman from Siberia? Well, during the Stalinist purges, many of the intellectuals were sent to the gulags of Siberia.

    Geography of Russia
Physical Map of Russia This is my online, introduction to the geography of Russia that is meant to accompany my HIS 241 and HIS 242 courses. On this web page, I have some general remarks about Russia's geography. Below on the page are links to two interactive maps of Russia; one requires the use of a "Flash" plug-in; the other does not. On either map, you will find links to some specific geographic features of Russia, such as the Ural Mountains . By following any link, you will find additional information on that geographic feature. Please note that most of these web pages are designed for a monitor display of 1024x768. The pages will also display on an 800x600 screen, but you will have to do some horizontal scrolling. Most of the land consists of vast plains: steppe to the south, taiga in the center; tundra to the north. This vast Eurasian plain, stretching from the Pacific Coast all the way into Central Europe, is broken only by the Ural Mountains in the middlemountains that because of their low height have never really been a barrier to travel or invasion. There are mountain ranges along the southern border of Russia. Although Russia possesses a very long coastlinemostly along the northit's overall climate is primarily "continental" because most of its large land mass is away from the moderating influence of the sea. The generally long, cold winters of the continental climate have affected where the people have settled, what they can grow, and what they can build.

Welcome to the Department of Geography at the University of Northern Iowa. If you are familiar with the discipline of Geography, you'll find a lot of useful information on our site. If you are new to Geography, then you might be surprised at what, and how much we do. Geography is the science of place and space. We use high-tech tools to discover and explain spatial patterns in the natural and human worlds. Geographers are active in the study of global warming, natural hazards, globalization, homeland security, rural and economic development, disease outbreaks, and much more. We still make maps, of course; but these days you aren't likely to see a geographer hunched over a drafting table. We use space-based technology and cutting-edge computer technology to create digital maps and interactive representations of the Earth and people. If you need any additional information, please contact the department head

      • Our History AVA Boundary
      • Wines of Russian River Valley ... Russian River Valley All wines start in the vineyard. In the Russian River Valley, individual vineyards are as famous as individual winemakers. The basic character of any vineyard is determined by two primary factors: weather and soil. Nothing can improve our almost perfect weather, and we can be very careful with our land. And the more careful we are, the better the wine becomes. A Cool Place to Grow Grapes
        Rocks Become Dirt
The geologic history of the Russian River Valley is both active and recent. The collision between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates caused the uplift of ancient bedrock, which then eroded. Within the last few million years the eruption of volcanic vents immediately to the east resulted in the deposition of volcanic ash on the shallow ocean bottom. The resulting sandstone gave us our famous Goldridge loam soil.
Water flowing off of the Sonoma Mountain range carried with it eroded volcanic material, creating soils with large amounts of clay in the central portion of the appellation. Then, in what remains a major mystery to geologists, the Russian River, which once flowed south to what is now San Francisco Bay, changed course and headed west through the coastal foothills. Along its course it deposited large amounts of alluvial materials that are now river benchlands. Each of these different soils has a profound effect on wine produced from grapes grown in this soil.
