History of Russia
W ith the dissolution of the Soviet Union there has been an enormous resurgence of interest in Russia's pre-Soviet past, as well as a great deal of debate and reconsideration of the Soviet era itself. This shift has not resulted in a simple vilification of everything Soviet or a naive embrace of all that preceded it, but it has spurred an unprecedented effort to regain the ancient Russian national heritage. Churches are being restored all across the country, great Russian writers and artists whose works were banned are once again being honored, and the individual character of ancient cities and communities is once again becoming established. Next year, the city of Moscow is celebrating its 850th Anniversary, a celebration that will mark the recovery, as well as the commemoration, of its glorious past. For most western visitors, the bulk of Russia's history is nothing more than a compendium of hazy legends and sensationalist rumorsfrom scurrilous stories about Catherine the Great to tabloid television reports of the miraculous survival of the children of Nicholas II. However, the factual history of the country is no less compelling than its fabulous history, and even a brief introduction to the great and not-so-great figures of its past make a visit far more rewarding. Russian Geography
  • Location
Russia occupies a northern location. Odessa, a "resort" town in the southern Russia (on the Black Sea), has the same latitude as Fargo, North Dakota. Moscow is on the 55th parallel, which passes through the middle of Hudson Bay in Canada. Leningrad is on the 61st parallel, as is Anchorage, Alaska. Travel from Brest on the Polish border to Vladivostok on the Pacific ocean takes about 8 days (only one change in Moscow!) Rivers In European Russia: Don, Dniepr - empty into the Black Sea Volga - empties into the Caspian Sea Most of them flow north to south Siberian Rivers: Ob, Enisei, Lena, Kolyma - flow south to north into the Arctic Ocean Amur - flows eastward - border between RUSSIA and China Flooding in Siberia - vast swamps Coastline Essentially a landlocked country. Its longest coastline opens on the Arctic Ocean. Both Baltic and Black Seas must pass through narrow straights, to connect to broader expanses of water. The Caspian and Aral Seas are totally landlocked. No warm water ports Climate Severely continental Gulf Stream reaches only Murmansk in the north Because no mountain ranges, icy winds from the Arctic Ocean sweeping to the Black Sea

Thats a big piece of real estate the largest country in the world.
For this reason, it makes sense to focus on a particular area when making your search inquiries.
For example, let us say you are writing to women from Kyrgyzstan and Belarus, respectively. Kyrgyzstan is a four-hour plane ride from Moscow in a southeasterly direction. Belarus is a one-hour plane ride from Moscow in a westerly direction.
It is like dating a woman from San Diego and a woman from Toronto at the same time. It can be done, but it is not easy. It is easier to concentrate on one geographic area such as Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, or Southern Russia.
It is always difficult to generalize about people or geographic areas. My purpose for mentioning this area of consideration is to give you an idea of why you may want to concentrate on one geographic area versus another.
For example, why would you want to consider a woman from Siberia? Well, during the Stalinist purges, many of the intellectuals were sent to the gulags of Siberia.

When you try to explain Russia, it is hard to find a starting point. The country is huge and somewhat of an enigma. Each Russian region and city is so different to the next: the nature, the weather, the standard of living, the architecture, the lifestyle all vary from place to place. If you really want to get to know Russia you have to prepare yourself for many adventures, for which you will need a lot of time, energy and dedication. For most westerners, Russia is associated with its largest cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg. But of course Russia is much bigger than this. Within its vast expanse you can find the largest freshwater lake in the world, rivers and forests teeming with fish and wildlife, awe-inspiring volcanos, and towering mountains. Russia is the largest country on earth, with enormous tracts of land that have only been opened to foreign travelers in the last few years. It takes over 8 hours by plane from Moscow to reach Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. To the west of the Ural Mountains, stretching south to the Black Sea and below the Arctic Sea, lies a broad plain with low hills where the historical core of the Russian nation is located. East of the Urals from the border of Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia and extending north to the Arctic coast lies Siberia - a scarcely- populated area covered by primeval forest, swamps and tundra in the north and mountainous terrain in the south.

Fifth Grade - Geography - Overview - January January's Geography unit consists of two lessons, 12 and 13. Lesson 12 is devoted to Russia. Lesson 13 is devoted to Japan. Both geography lessons provide the background for January's History unit. The history of both countries is influenced by their physical geography. Lesson 12 is titled "Early Growth and Expansion." The theme is Russia's search for warm-water ports. This search is a result of Russia's largely central location on a continent that extends to high latitudes. The result of Russia's location is a harsh climate, which compounds the scarcity of seaports. Russia's location and climate have thus contributed to the country's isolation from the rest of the world. First, use the geography lesson on Russia, Lesson 12. Then, teach the two World History Lessons 20 and 21. Japan is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Its insularity has shaped the country's history in that Japanese history is dominated by the theme of isolation. Lesson 13 on the geography of Japan must be used before the two History lessons (Lessons 22 and 23) that follow. The geography lesson on Japan provides the background for the lessons on Japanese history. Both lessons in this unit may be done by students working independently, in groups or individually. The lessons may also be used as teacher-directed activities.
