    Unrest in Kyrgyzstan
Trouble has again erupted in the former Soviet republic (now an independent country) of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic). Since independence in 1991, and then the subsequent Tulip Revolution of 2005, political stabiity has been difficult to come by, primarily because of ongoing corruption issues and the failure to the government to develop any sort of firm economic basis for the country's citizens. Katyn Tragedy Redux
As if the first Katyn Forest massacre was not enough, Poland now must mourn again. A plane of Polish army and political leaders crashed in heavy fog conditions as they were on their way to a memorial service at Katyn (60 years since the original massacre in 1940 of Polish military leaders by the Soviet secret police and military on the orders of Stalin). The memorial service was to be attended by PM Vladimir Putin himself as a gesture to improving Polish-Russian relations, which have tended to be quite frosty over the years.

Early Russia for Kids - When did Russia first become a country? What was it like?
    Early Russia
Ukrainian landscape By 500 BC , some of the people living in Russia were called the Scythians . Russian people had some hard times between about 300 and 600 AD , when they were invaded by the Ostrogoths , the Avars , and the Huns But the first time that those people united into one country was about 800 AD (the same time as Charlemagne in Western Europe). Santa Sophia cathedral in Novgorod (1050 AD) About this time, Vikings from Scandinavia (modern Norway, Denmark, and Sweden) discovered that they could trade with the Byzantine Empire on the Black Sea by sailing down the Volga and Dnieper rivers, through Russia. When they did this in the 800's AD, they met the Slavs , who were also moving into Russia, and together the Vikings and the Slavs united Russia into a kingdom with its capital at Novgorod. The medieval kingdom of Russia included only the westernmost part of what is now Russia, but it also included most of modern Ukraine.

    Russian History:
    A Brief Summary
Situated on the great Eurasian plane, Russia has been vulnerable to invasions from both East and West (Mongols, 13-14 th cent.; French, 1812; Germans, 1941) but was also well-placed to expand laterally, once a centralized autocratic state emerged under the grand princes of Moscow th cent.). Today Russia spans the entire northern part of the Eurasian continent. Adoption of Orthodox Christianity from Byzantium (988?) brought Russia into the fold of Christian Europe and at the same time set it apart from the Roman Catholic West. Therein lies the beginning of Russia’s ambivalence toward the West and the recurrent belief in the country’s special destiny as the bearer of true faith, whether Orthodox Christianity, Slavic commonwealth, or Communism. With its persistent mediaeval legacy and barely touched by the Renaissance and Reformation, Russia emerges on the world stage only under Peter the Great (1682-1725). He established a lasting pattern for meeting the challenge of the West: selective adoption of modern Western institutions in war, industry, science, and education without diminishing the centralized state and its power of confiscatory taxation. Where the reforms were successful, achievements over the last two centuries have been spectacular: literature (Tolstoy, Dostoevsky), music (Chaikovsky, Shostakovich), art (Malevich), theater and ballet (Stanislavsky, Diaghilev), film (Eisenstein), science (Mendeleev, Pavlov), weapons and space technology (Sputnik). Russia became a military superpower when it defeated Napoleon (1812-14) and remains one to this day. But serfdom was abolished only in 1861, land ownership is still unresolved, and historic grievances in the empire’s borderlands to this day threaten the integrity of the state.
