I Long Dared Not Speak
By Brian Reed tags: I've returned from Poland.  It will take me a while to process the amazing things I've seen, from the Baltic to the Black Madonna of Czestochowa.  For now, I thought I'd just rave a little bit more about Anna Akhmatova.
Hello Goodbye Hello
By Brian Reed tags: Here at the University of Washington, our over-long academic year is finally ending, and I am eager to be gone.  Quick as I can, I'll be at a spa near Poznań in Poland, first stop on a East European vacation.  I thought I'd post a poem about departures:  Anna Akhmatova's "Pesnia poslednei vstrechi" (Song of the Last Meeting).

Russian Literature: Introduction and Reading List
Submitted by admin on Fri, 07/31/2009 - 16:35 Making a comprehensive guide to Russian literature would be an enormous task. We decided to make a list of our favorite as well as the major writers and list their most interesting works. Apart from Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Nabokov, we also list lesser known, but very important Russian writers from the 18th and 19th centuries. We also added several modern and contemporary writers whose work is truly inspiring, original, and provides a great insight into Russian culture and people of today.

Russian literature
Old Russian literature consists of sparse popular tales and folklore: educated and literary Russian-speakers used Old Church Slavonic as a literary vehicle. Westernization of Russia (particularly associated with the name of Tsar Peter the Great coincided with reform of the Russian alphabet and increased tolerance of the idea of employing the popular language for general literary purposes. Writers like Dmitri Kantemir and Mikhail Lomonosov in the earlier 18th century paved the way for poets like Derzhavin, playwrights like Sumarokov and prose writers like Karamzin and Radishchev. Romanticism permitted a flowering of especially poetic talent: the names of Zhukovsky and Pushkin came to the fore, followed by Mikhail Lermontov Nineteenth-century developments included Ivan Krylov the fabulist; non-fiction writers such as Belinsky and Aleksandr Herzen; and a group of widely-recognised novelists such as Nikolai Gogol Lev Tolstoy Fyodor Dostoevsky , Leskov, Ivan Turgenev , Saltykov-Shchedrin and Goncharov.

Golden Age of Russian Literature
Home Library Russian History Encyclopedia The Golden Age of Russian Literature is notably not a term often employed in literary criticism. It does not refer to any particular school or movement (e.g., Classicism, Romanticism, Realism); rather, it encompasses several of them. As such, it immediately falls prey to all the shortcomings of such literary categorizations, not the least of which is imprecision. The term furthermore demands, eo ipso, a pair of ungilded ages at either end, and might lead one to an easy and unstudied dismissal of works outside its tenure. Finally, those who wrote during its span were not particularly aware of living in an aureate age, and they certainly never consciously identified themselves as belonging to a unified or coherent faction - any similarity is adduced from the outside and puts in jeopardy the authors' particular geniuses. That said, the phrase "golden age of Russian literature" has gained currency and therefore, if for no other reason, deserves to be defined as carefully and intelligently as possible.

R ussian literature has always been one of the most powerful artistic forces in the world. Realism originated in Russia, perhaps, as early as Pushkin (1798-1837). Russian philosophy has always been an integral part of the literature. T he seed of existentialism is found in Dostoevsky and passive resistance, used so effectively by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, originated in the works of Tolstoy. The Bakhtin Centre
The Centre's purpose is to promote multi- and inter-disciplinary research on the work of the Russian philosopher and theorist Mikhail Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle, and on related areas of cultural, critical, linguistic and literary theory. Its scope thus extends beyond the limits of traditional Russian and Slavic studies. There is also a Bakhtin bibliography maintained by Filipp Sapienza.

(Unlike in Germany or England of the time, blackmail for homosexuality seems to have been unknown in nineteenth-century Russia.) The Reforms of Tsar Alexander II Homosexuality became somewhat more visible in Russian life and literature after the momentous reforms initiated by Tsar Alexander II in the early 1860s that abolished serfdom, replaced an archaic legal system with trials by jury open to press and public, and reduced the censorship of books and periodicals.
