While taking a look at the Rwanda geography , this country located in Central Africa, has grasslands going to the surrounded hills. The neighboring countries of Rwanda are Tanzania, Uganda, Congo and Burundi. Rwanda is completely landlocked.
Rwanda is located in Central Africa. The total area of Rwanda is 26,338 Km Square. The neighboring countries of Rwanda are Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and Uganda. These days many trees are being cut in Rwanda for various purposes which can result in serious environmental problems. The main natural resources in Rwanda are:
  • Tin Ore
  • Tungsten Ore
  • Hydropower
  • Gold
  • Methane Gas
The closer look at the geography of Rwanda presents the picture of its volcanoes in northwest direction and mountains in southeast. There are six volacnoes in Rwanda and one of these is named Karisimbi.and the whole range is known as Birunga Mountains. There are many rivers also in Rwanda that form the source of the great river Nile. There is river Kagera in Rwanda which forms the border between Tanzania and Rwanda. River Ruzizi creates the border between Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are divides between the drainage systems of the rivers Congo and Nile that are extended through western Rwanda and the land has sloping in the direction of Lake Kivu part of the Great Lakes. The total number of lakes in Rwanda is twenty three. The hills at the eastern slopes are low in altitude.

  • Africa Map Rwanda (see map below) is a landlocked country in east central Africa along the western branch of the Great Rift Valley, which is its western border. Lake Kivu, on the western side, lies within the valley. North of it are the Virunga Mountains, which are of volcanic origin. Some are still active volcanoes. This is a habitat of the mountain gorilla. The highest point in the country, at 14,787 ft. (4,507 m), is the volcano Karisimbi. The Virunga Mountains are part of the rift system. From the rift in the west, to the east, the altitude declines, and is mostly made up of grassy hills/uplands. The climate is temperate, with two rainy seasons each year, February to April and November to January. Frost and snow occur in the mountainous regions. Rwanda lies 2 degrees south of the equator. 35% of the land is fit for cultivation. Forests make up 22%, and pasturelands 18%. Total area is 10,169 square miles (26,338 sq km). Kigali, in central Rwanda, has an average annual temperature of 66° F, and rainfall of 40 inches.
